  2. A belief system gives you guidance in your daily life, and usually teaches you how to live life. It gives people reassurance on life and sometimes even after life. It represents your values, and sometimes gives reason to the unexplainable. One positive influence belief systems has on lives of people, is that it gives guidance to its believers. It sets up rules to help them live their lives. However, one negative influence would be that its believers only think one way, and live the way they were taught. Even if it means for them to go through pain and suffering, they will still do it. Some people get too caught up in religion that they may do things that harm them. The main principles of Hinduism and Buddhism is that they both believe in dharma, karma, reincarnation and meditation. They believe that if you fulfill your duty in life, you will earn good karma and you will be reincarnated in a higher ranking. Siddhartha also follows these principals. For example on pg. 14 it states '' Siddhartha practiced unselfing, practiced meditation.''(Siddhartha) Siddhartha tried to end his self desires by meditating. He felt that by ending his desire to want things, he will not go through suffering. He used a main principle of Buddhism and Hinduism to help accomplish his goal. Siddhartha is strongly influenced by his belief system.

  3. A belief system shows you the way of life that you should live. It also shows the values someone has a specific object or person. A positive influence belief system can have on their followers is to help the followers in life. It can teach them to believe in themseleves and to be optimistic and to always look on the bright side and help them in life. But belief system and also have negative influences on their followers. This influence can be taking in what the learned from their way of life the wrong way and using it in a way that will hurt others and maybe the community. This happend when a person is too caught up with themselves or their religion. The main parts of Hindusim and Buddhism are reincarnation, meditation, dharma, karama and moksha. The people with this belief system's responsibility is to do their job which is dharma to earn good karma so when they reincarnate in their next life they can get a higher rank in society. Siddhartha and his friend Govinda also follows these ways of life. " Govinda, dear friend, come with me to the banyan tree, let us meditate" (page 7). They meditate together as a part of following their belief and tried to end his desires for things he wanted as a person. Siddhartha's belief system inpacted his life by him giving up everything he had to answer his questions and to accommpolish his goal in life.

  4. A belief system is a way people live their lives. It can be referred to as a creed, culture, or religion.
Belief systems can have both positive and negative influences on society. It all depends on interpretation. It can be positive if belief systems tell people to be good and be good to others. It can be negative if belief systems tell people to be bad and do evil deeds.
Hinduism and Buddhism share and differ many traits. They both have karma(what goes around comes around), dharma(one's duty in life), reincarnation(reborn in a different form after death), and nirvana/moksha(a perfect afterlife). Buddhism has rules called The Four Noble Truths and the Eightfold Path. They believe in no gods as well. Hinduists have a social class system that they follow and believe in multiple gods. On page 9, Sidhartha says,"My longing is to become a samana". This means that he wants to be a follower of buddhism.
The belief system influences Siddhartha by making him want to reach a state of enlightenment.

  5. A belief system is the way certain people live their lives, following a culture, religon or a way of theirs that those people find is right and live it with other people who find it true as well going through it as a society or group. A positive effect to it would be, amongst each other they can help each other out with their problems and also make a bigger impact on making a difference for their belief.A negative effect on belief system would be that with all following the belief can come to a disagreement which can cause a likelier disaster in their society. The main teaching of Hinduism and Buddhism is that both believe in riencarnation,Karma and Dharma. If you complete your duty in life then you get good Karma as well as having being riencarnated to higher spot in monarchy. Siddhartha had followed Buddhism and Hinduism when he followed the samanas, ignoring the pain of sun or hunger ,having no desire and accomplishing his goal through "om" in meditation.(page 15 paragraph 2)Siddhartha having the knoweledge of fasting and waiting for good things in life gained from the samanas in the forrest, he has learned to not get hungry or starve that soon as well as encountering things calm and nicely.

  6. I agree with Michele, Siddhartha having that belief system has guided him through things, finally taking him to his true knowing and accomplishing his goal. His thirst of seeking something certain in life leads him to find something real which is all in life is like one river flowing through it.Govinda sees he accomplished his goal as well when he asked him where he gets his teachings from, giving Siddhartha the opportunity to tell Govinda what he had learn that made him at peace. (page 129 paragraph 4)

  7. Adding on to what Winnie said, Siddhartha has meditated to overcome the obsticles that he ran in to, but his meditation didn't heal him away from his desires for a long time, it went away giving Siddhartha's ego back making him have to overcome the desires a thousand more times. (page 15 paragraph 2)

  8. A belief system is like a code to life people follow to reach their goal (heaven, enlightenment). One positive influence belief systems have is they give the followers a goal to look forward to. It gives the followers a good reason to live through hard times. It also helps them organize their lives better. One negative influence belief systems have is sometimes many people will follow that way and only that way and won't listen to anyone else. That can cause many arguments between friends and high positioned people in the world. That may lead to war and eventually murder. The main tenets of Hinduism and Buddhism is to follow your dharma (duty in life) to get good karma to be reincarnated in a higher position. Siddhartha also follows these beliefs. For example, it states on page 14 "Siddhartha stood silent in the vertical blaze of the sun, burning with pain, burning with thirst, and he stood till he felt no pain or thirst"(Siddhartha). Siddhartha believed that to get rid of pain and suffering, one must meditate until he feels no pain or suffering. This belief is a main teaching in Buddhism and Hinduism. This belief impacts Siddhartha's life by teaching him how to be calm and patient and to get rid of life's desires to reach enlightenment

  10. I agree with what Elizabeth added. Meditation is not very easy to master and due to life's "grip" on people, desire is not easily given up.

  11. I disagree with what Peter said. Siddhartha doesn't just believe in Buddhism. He also believes in Hinduism because Buddhism and Hinduism have similar teachings to each other. So Siddhartha believes in a bit of both.

  12. A belief system is a set of rules put in place in order to help people achieve their goal in life. A positive influence that a belief system may have is that it gives the followers a foundation to depend on, which will lead them on to the right path. A negative influence belief systems have is that it will only allow them to do what the belief system wants them to do even if it brings pain and suffering. The main ideas of Hinduism and Buddhism are reincarnation, dharma, karma, meditation, and nirvana/moksha. People who believe in this system try to achieve nirvana. Siddhartha, also, tries to achieve nirvana by meditating. "He already knew how to soundlessly speak the om...breathing it out with all his soul,..." (page 3.) Siddhartha uses meditation to try to get closer to nirvana and to get rid of his desires. Siddhartha is impacted by his belief system because his desire to reach enlightment drives him to leave his family and everything dear to him so that he may find enlightment.

  13. I agree with Elizabeth. I think that it was Siddhartha's ego that was causing the trouble because it was his ego that was bringing all the desires back.

    ReplyDelete
  14. I agree with Michele because Siddhartha needed to meditate and follow his instincts so that he can achieve enlightment at the end of his long journey.

  15. A belief system is something that has ideas, values and morals mixed into one. It is what people believe are important and can help in life. A positive influence belief systems have on followers is that it can lead them to a successful life if it is to teach them to be a mannered person with great responsibilities. A negative influence belief systems can have on followers is that it can make the followers feel that believing only that one way will make them do good in life and this will cause them to not want to try new ways even if they are being harmed in a way. An example from Siddhartha: "Siddhartha stood silent in the vertical blaze of the sun, burning with pain, burning with thirst, and he stood till he felt no pain or thirst. He stood silent in the rainy season, the water dripping from his hair, over freezing shoulders, over freezing hips and legs, and the penitent stood until his legs and shoulders were no longer freezing, until they fell silent, until they were still. Silently he crouched in the twisting brambles, the blood dripping from his burning skin..." (page 14). That quote showed how even if Siddhartha was in pain, he took in the pain and kept doing what he was doing. The main tenets of Hinduism and Buddhism is they believe in reincarnation, dharma, karma and that desire causes pain. Siddhartha follows this because he meditates and blocks out the desire for anything, leaving him with no pain. "Siddhartha lingered rigid, lingered motionless until no more blood flowed, until nothing more pricked, until nothing more burned." (page 14). One way Siddhartha's belief system impacts him is by making him stick to it, and try his best to reach his goal of no desire and also making him follow the rules of the samanas. "Taught by the eldest of the samanas, Siddhartha practiced unselfing, practiced meditation, according to the samana rules." (page 14)

  16. I agree with Michele on how Siddhartha gave up everything he had to answer his questions and to accomplish his goal in life. This is how he is following the ways of Hinduism and Buddhism because he is giving up his desires to have no pain.

  17. I agree with Winnie on her definition of belief system. It does give a guidance to people and their everyday life because they follow what they believe is important to a better life.

  18. Stephanie Wang -

A belief system is how people live in their community or society that form a unified system. One positive influence belief system can have on the lives of their followers is that whatever their family or ancestors from generation to generation believed in can impact other people to follow them. Such as if the ancestors did something good they can be role model for their followers to do good things too. One negative influence would be that the follower's belief system does not always impact people to do good thing but can also cause them to do bad thing. Doing bad thing would show that they do not believe in their ancestors. The main tenets of Hinduism is that they believe in more than one god that their journey is similar to the "circle of life" where each person experiences births, deaths, and rebirths. And Buddhism is similar but their main teachings contain rules for conduct and their ethics. They'll have to behave to their parents just like Siddhartha when his father asked him if he was going to give up becoming a Samana or either die than obeying his father. Siddhartha said "Siddhartha will do what his father say." Siddhartha respected his father in the end but his father was touched by him and finally gave in. One way in which Siddhartha's belief system impacts his life is that he have to obey his father. When he wanted to become a samana his father refused. He couldn't do anything about it since he had to behave and respect his parents. Even his father was extremely furious when Siddhartha told him about becoming a samana. His father wasn't allow to speak angry and violent words so all he said was he doesn't want to hear that again from Siddhartha.

  19. Stephanie Wang-

I agree with Kayla that one positive influence
belief system would be that it can lead them to be successful because they'll follow others and learn to do good things like them. They'll also learn to be responsible.

I agree with Peter that Siddhartha wants to become a samana meaning he does want to become a follower of buddhism too. Siddhartha's destiny will soon be shown of his success and how he wants to become a samana.

  22. A belief system is a set of morals, values and rules that a group of people believe in and follow. Belief systems can give a follower a reason to live, because without the belief system the follower will not know what to do. A negetive influence a belief system can have on a follower that it gives the follower one perspective on things. They will always believe that what they do is the right thing. The main tenets of buddhism are the eight fold path and the four noble truths. While hinduism believe in reincarnation, dharma, kharma and moksha. Buddhism and Hinduism actually have alot in common. Buddhism focuses around ending or preventing suffering and Siddhartha is auffering. In the book Siddhartha:Those were Siddhartha's thought, that was his thirst, that was his suffering...iy often seemes close-the celestial woeld; but he never fully reached it. This is showing that Siddhartha's thoughts and want to know more is making him suffer. He should follow the four noble truths so he can prevent suffering. He then begins to meditate to take some of the pain away and this meditation shows Buddhism and hinduism. Siddhartha's belief system does not allow him to want things so this gives him an idea of what do i need to survive not what i want.

  23. I agree with Rima because people need to know on what they are basing things on and how to use that to get on the right path. Its like your showing them the starting line but they have to cross the finish line on their own.

  25. A belief system can be a religion, creed, or simply a code of morals/ethics. In relation to each other, these systematic forms of belief all share the same fundamental principal, which is to guide a person through life and have them ultimately achieve a certain spiritual bond with an entity whom is considered "God" in most cases, or cultivate a person into a specific desired personality. One positive influence belief systems can have on the lives of their followers is that it gives them a certain path to follow, a "truth" that they have for so long desired. It puts the followers minds at ease, and assures the followers that they are on the right path, a sort of sacred path. The followers life is no more a struggle for whats right and wrong, it is peaceful, it is "Om". One negative influence belief systems can have on the lives of their followers is that belief systems such as religions, make a lot of their followers very ignorant towards other belief systems and religious faith. Because a belief system or religious faith gives its followers a "truth" or "right path", the followers have no other choice but to assume that all other religious faiths are lies and are of the "wrong path". This creates tension and hatred between different belief systems, which results in wars and other problems. The main tenets of Hinduism and Buddhism include the respect for all living things, meditation, reincarnation, and the goal of elevating ones self to a higher spiritual understanding(through meditation). In the book "Siddhartha", these tenets overlap in most of the spiritual belief systems that Siddhartha and Govinda submit to. When Govinda is a Hindu, he practices meditation with Siddhartha, and when he is Buddhist, he still practices meditation. The same goes for Siddhartha throughout his life as both a Hindu and a Samana, as he practices meditation in both belief systems. Belief systems have an immense impact of Siddhartha's life. For example, in "Siddhartha", Siddhartha states, "In my body and in my soul I realized that I greatly needed sin, I needed lust, vanity, the striving for goods, and I needed the most shameful despair to learn how to give up resistance, to learn how to love the world, to stop comparing the world with any world that I wish for, that I imagine, with any perfection that I think up; I learned how to let the world be as it is, and to love it and to belong to it gladly"(pg. 125). As you can see, this quote explains the idea that Siddhartha had to be everything, had to experience everything, good and bad, to finally attain the "Om" state of perfection and peace. Just like this, Siddhartha had to experience different belief systems, and be a part of them, to realize that no belief system could guide him towards perfection, and that "Om" would only come to him from personal experience, not teachings from certain belief systems, even though those belief systems were key to Siddhartha's journey.

  27. I agree with Rima. The fact that belief systems provide their followers with a "foundation" is key to understanding belief systems as they can be viewed as resource centers for communities, giving communities a foundation to build themselves more strongly than before.

  28. 1.a belief system is a series of belief that a culture follows such as the way they dress the food they eat or the way they live their lives or who they look up to example budda or god.on pg(1)it says "sun tanned Siddhartha's light shoulders on the riverbank when he bathed when he performed his holy ablutions his holy offerings" this shows that Siddhartha's belief is that he should do his offerings in the river cause he could do it anywhere else but he chooses to do it in the river.
2one positive influence belief systems can have on the lives of their followers are that their follows have a something to follow in life like for people be believe in god they have heaven to look forward to so it gives people a reason to look towards the future and one negative influence belief systems can have on the lives of their follower is that some people tend to abuse their power in history in Europe the pope abused his power and therefore people have wars to stand up for that they believe in.
3.the main tenets of Hinduism and Buddhism are that they both believe in karma and dharma. karma is bascally what we read in the bible an eye for an eye meaning what goes around comes around.Dharma ones duty or role in life. They both also believe in reincarnation meaning that they if complete their dharma or duty in life when they die they will reborn in a higher rank this is important cause they believed that no one can move up in their social class unless by reincarnation.they both believed that if they follow these beliefs they will reach of Nirvana a state of perfection. Also Hinduism and Buddhism have many differences such as Buddhism follow the 4 noble truths and the 8 folds path also they believe in many gods. but mean while in Hinduism they mostly believe in one god but also believe in other gods since they believe that their is a spirt and soul in everything and everyone.
4.One way Siddhartha's belief system impacts his life is that he is willing to fight for what he believes in but will still make sure he doesnt harms the people he care about pg (10)"And would you rather die than obey your father?
Siddhartha has always obeyed his father
than you will give up your plan
Siddhartha has always obeyed his father" this shows that even tho hes going to fight to become a samana he wont disrespect his father.

  30. A belief system is ideas based on values and morals of life . It demonstrates the importance in objects, people, and respect . Belief systems play a major role in human life, because it involves the ways of life , the faith and cultural needs in ones life, and rules that people live by . Belief systems are things that can have a postie effect or a negative effect on their followers. A positive influence that belief systems have on people , can be that it leads them to have success in their maneuvered life. People choose the way they want to live their life, and with good guidance provided from a belief system , people can obey themselves , and the rules they choose to live by. By doing so they can live a life of success , obtain great responsibilities, and be triumphant with they're morals . A negative influence is that belief systems can sometimes cause controversy. Certain followers of a belief systems can get the idea of that they're belief system is the only way to live life, and an other follower can look at their belief in the same way. This leads to clashing heads and can lead to something as dramatic as a war. A war can put many people in danger. Its sort of like a domino affect , one problem leads to another. Two specific belief systems following monotheism are Hinduism and Buddhism. Hinduism and Buddhism share a value on karma, dharma , meditation and reincarnation, and to desire nothing in life , because desire brings pain. They are portrayed in the book Siddhartha By Herman Hesse. For example “Siddhartha had a goal, a single one: to become empty-empty of thirst, empty of desire, empty of dreams, empty of joy and sorrow. To die away from himself, no loner be self, in unselfed thinking: that was his goal” (pg.13) This quote shows and demonstrates, how much passion he has on his beliefs. He wants to reach his goal of being cleansed of all negative aspects that don't follow his belief system., and simply be a follower well devoted and well conducted to his morals .“Siddhartha learned much amoung the Samanas , he learned to follow many paths away from his ego . He followed the path of unselfing through pain, through the voluntary suffering and overcoming, of pain, of hunger , of thirst, of fatigue. He followed the path of unselfing thourgh meditation , learned to follow those and other paths, he left his self a thousand times for hours on end and days on end his lingered in the nonself.”(pg. 15) This quote shows the positive outcome that lead to success in fulfilling his duties of his belief system. He honored himself and his belief system in where he accomplished all major parts of his goal. Siddhartha's life revolves around his values and his belief system is followed by him. He is greatly influenced as a follower , and respects the morals of Hinduism and Buddhism.

  31. Luis's remark "Belief systems can give a follower a reason to live, because without the belief system the follower will not know what to do" reminds me of destiny , and how certain people believe destiny is the reason why we live. It shows how destiny relates to specific belief systmes. I agree with him because in many belief systems the follower is being lead in life.

  32. I disagree with Kayla William's Remark "A positive influence belief systems have on followers is that it can lead them to a successful life if it is to teach them to be a mannered person with great responsibilities. " becuase some people have belief systems in which they don't believe in being well mannered or have great responsibilites.

  33. A belief system is the way people live their daily lives. A positive influence that a belief system has on people is that it gives them an idea on how to live their life and show their values. People set up goals for themselves to achieve and it can lead to success. A negative influence that belief system has on people is that it only gives people a certain way to live their life. They disregard other belief systems because they would think their own belief system is the correct way of life. This would lead to arguments and hatred between different followers. Hinduism and Buddhism both share the same principles as in meditation, karma, dharma, and reincarnation. Siddhartha also follows these principles. “Siddhartha had a goal, a single one: to become empty-“(13). For Siddhartha to become empty, he would meditate every day. He believes that by becoming empty, he would have no desires and this would not cause him any pain. By following his duties of every day meditation, it can help Siddhartha find his rightful path throughout life. Siddhartha’s belief system impacts his life because it revolves around him which causes him to not desire anything and for him to have a better life.

  34. I agree with Rima. Because of what Siddhartha believes in, he was willing to leave his family and depend on himself to empty his desires and find enlightenment.

  35. I agree with Elizabeth Bonilla. By following Hinduism and Buddhism, Siddhartha ignored every pain and desire by meditating. He was able to gain knowledge and this has caused him to gain experience.

  36. I agree with Cindy as to how belief systems affect Siddhartha, but Siddhartha doesn't really ever find his rightful path in life through meditation. Its like trial and error, as he identifies defects in his life as both a Samana and a Hindu.

  37. Belief systems are systems of beliefs that separated us according to our religion. One positive influence that the belief systems have on its followers is that people can have a set of rules that isn't to be breaked so the followers can become and stay civilized, just like today. However, these sets of rules may have a negative influence on its followers, such as corupted leaders/priests rewriting the rules to swift our good actions to bad actions. One example showing this is the corrupted church making the people paying for a spot in heaven somewhere in history. Main tenet of Hinduism and Buddhism is karma, dharma, and incarnation. Karma/dharma means what goes around comes around. Having this in mind, followers of Hinduism and Buddhism will want to do good things so that they can ressurect to someone of a higher position/social class. On page 14 in the book "Siddhartha", it says, "Siddhartha practice meditation according to the samana rules." This explains that Siddhartha is trying to remain in peace and stay on the "good side" so he can be reborn with a higher social class. One way that beliefs impact Siddhartha is that everytime he is feeling a sense of greed or desire (or something that seems to have bad effects), he will meditate in peace until he is refreshed.

  38. Belief system are creed that people live with and guide their life with. A belief system could be a culture, religion or philosophies. Religions often bring their follower peace and a guide for life, but some religion doesn't always adopt others religion's belief. The Crusades is an example of two different belief going againsit each other. During the Crusades, Christian and the Islam Empire were fighting each other for the control of holy land (Jerusalem). The fighting created dead and violence to the world. Hinduism and Buddhism both believe in meditation, karma, dharma, mokshaand reincarnation. But Buddhists believe that everyone have the same chance to reach enlightenment; Hindus believe in the caste system and think that the only way to move up to a higher social class is to follow their dharma and get more karma. In page 14, it say " "Siddhartha lingered rigid, lingered motionless until no more blood flowed, until nothing more pricked, until nothing more burned." This passage show that Siddhartha was leaving his life as a prince and trying to find perfection. Siddhartha was greatly impact by his belief.

  41. A belief system is the way you live your life and the way it is organized. In your belief system you have your religion, values, culture, traditions, holidays, and etc.One positive effect is that your life is organized and you share the same values as other people. This way you will fit in and do what is pleasing to your belief system. One negative effect of a belief system is that once you are used to it you can never quit. You have the choice to quit but it will impact the way people see you. You only know how to live life a certain way since you are familiar and used to it.The main teachings of Hinduism and Buddhism are karma which means that as long as you do your role and follow the rules you will get good karma. They also believe in dharma which is your role in life. They believe in reincarnation which is coming back to life as something or someone else after death.Hinduism had social classes which Buddhism rejected because the priest were getting to powerful.Buddhism also teaches about the Eightfold Path and the Four Noble Truths."Siddhartha had long been taking part in the conversation of the sages, practicing the verbal battle with Govinda, practicing the art of contemplation with Govinda, the service of meditation"(3).
Siddhartha has to follow his beliefs since he wants to reach enlightenment and he is expected to meditate to relief himself of desire.

  44. Belief systems have been around for a lot of years and some are practiced today. Belief systems is something someone beliefs in deeply and they hold vales that they preach. All cultural societies develop belief systems and values that improve or better a community. A belief system helps people be guided in times of need or to study morals and keep cultures live long. A belief system holds rules, laws, religious speeches, and wise words from wise men. Belief systems can be good or bad depending on the point of view of the followers. One positive influence is that people can learn lessons and follow teachings to improve their lives and make a better future for others. A negative influence can be that people can kill, cause harm to others to get what they want or believe they are powerful and create unfair rules. Hinduism is a religion developed in India. The biggest goal of Hinduism is moksha the quality of somebody’s current and future lives as determined by the person’s behavior in their present lives and future lives, which is based on the cycle of death and rebirth. The belief of karma, what comes around goes around determines one birth in the next life depending on the cast system. One of the basic beliefs of Buddhism which is held firmly is that happiness and good fortune can be reached regardless of age and background. Buddhists believe that all delusions can be overcome by practicing meditation.(http://www.catalogs.com/info/spirituality/basic-beliefs-of-buddhism.html) In the book Siddhartha they follow the teachings from the holy books and the wise men. They believe in meditation just like the Buddhist. They also believe to never speak angry violent words “Wonderful wisdom was in these verses, all the wisdom of the wisest was gathered here in magical words” (pg6). They believe to always speak in wise words and to teach the newborn. Siddhartha belief system does impact his life. Though Siddhartha is loved by his community to Siddhartha he’s not causing joy to himself, he feels there’s need for change. Yes Siddhartha values his beliefs of the holy book but are the wise men happy, are they in peace? Siddhartha wants to be different a Sama. The belief of meditation helps him relax and think. Siddhartha knows there’s more than a just powerful, magical word. These beliefs shorten Siddhartha dreams and caused him to disobey Brahmin. It makes it harder to explore a new life of change.

  47. A belief system is a set of morals/rules that influence the decisions you make and they way your act or feel. A positive influence that a belief system can have on someone is structure and guidance to do right in there life. One negative influence a belief system can have is the influence to make you ignorance on others beliefs and their own values, so therefore you find yourself trying to change others beliefs to try and agree with your own. The main tenets for Hinduism and Buddhism is the principal of following your dharma to get could karma so you can get reincarnated into a better social class in your next life , alongside with meditation being desire less and having inner peace within yourself. These tenets relate back to Siddhartha’s life when “Siddhartha practiced unselfing, practiced meditation, according to the Samana rules” (14). In addition Siddhartha’s belief system impacts his life by taking him on a journey and the teachings of him to become desire less and unselfish. “Siddhartha learned much from the Samanas, he learned to follow many paths away from his ego”(15) This quote reveals his belief systems of following the Samanas taught him of other aspects in life than just to go after what he wants to finding what better benefits everyone and everything else around him .This is how Siddhartha’s belief system structure his life just like it does ours.

  48. i agree with Samir because it’s true the belief systems only show its followers the “right path” and as he said they have no other choice to believe other religions are lies. Which to me it is the same as being brainwash into believing that your religion is the best. Which it makes its harder for people to reach “om” as he said. He has been thoughtful with his thoughts and well expressed.

  49. A belief systems is a set of value a person truly believes in that they follow that value throughout their life. It can be in the form of religion, emotion, moral, and philosophies. Simply put it's one's ideal in life that can separate or bond people together. One positive influence a belief systems have on their followers is that it gives a person a special, unique path to take in life.It has the power to motivate and give the person the will to take the path to the very end. Weather a person chooses the right or wrong path they would go on to the end with their beliefs.Living with their beliefs is what gives a person the meaning in life no matter what are there choices. One negative influence that a belief system have on their followers is that a negative belief system would create a negative reality. You who follow a belief system which tells your life is dull, boring, pointless and horrible would cause you great lost in life, questioning things all around you.Your, yourself would have no confidence on what you do and frightened by reality. You're making your life all miserable by following such a negative belief system.Fear and negative relationship are bound to happen sooner or later.People won't accept or recognize the negative belief system they have since it builds up for along time.In the end they will go down in reality until they can find their positive belief system. The main tenets of Buddhism and Hinduism is ahimsa, karma, dharma, mediation, reincarnation and the eightfold path.Siddhartha was one of the believer of the fact that mediation can help him find answers. He mediated throughout part of his life looking for a answer. He also listened to Gautama teaching of the eightfold path and life is full of suffering.Siddhartha belief system changed his course in life."That gap is your teaching about the overcoming of the world, about deliverance. And that small gap, that small break shatters and abolishes the whole eternal and unified law of the world"(31)Siddhartha objected Gautama of his teaching and felt something was missing. He does not believe Gautama teaching was perfect in a sense. The world still was full of holes and gaps. There are still parts to be discover out there. He didn't stay with Gautama to learn his teaching. He believed that the teaching alone was not the same as experiencing what Gautama journeyed.Siddhartha too himself journeyed to gain new knowledge and fill in the missing gaps. For years and years he traveled for his belief and struggled through many conflict to reach his certain goal. His beliefs made him wander and travel leading him to a new course in life.

  52. A belief system is an explanation of the world that gives people answers and a purpose. People are always inquisitive and a belief system would put their mind to ease about how the world came into being, and give them something to turn to whenever they had a problem. A positive influence of a belief system is that with it there can be common ground on which everyone can come to a consensus. It brings people together. A negative influence is when a belief system is so strong that it causes harm to people who do not conform to it. Such non-believers would usually be outcast or physically harmed. A belief system could disrupt their lives immensely and change it for the worse. The main tenets of Hinduism and Buddhism are reincarnation, karma, dharma, Nirvana and meditation. In Siddartha, these beliefs are shown through the fact that Siddartha goes on his journey to find a true teaching that can deliver him. "He has turned sixty and has not yet reached Nirvana. He will turn seventy or eighty, and you and I, we will get almost as old as we will practice, and we will fast and we will will meditate. But we will never reach Nirvana, not he, not we." (17) Siddartha has this same problem with all of the belief systems that he tries. If he cannot obtain Nirvana in any of them then he shall renounce them. His beliefs impact his life because they bring him unhappiness by trying to fulfill them. He has had to give up everything for uncertain answers or methods just to make his life meaningful in the terms of the beliefs.

Though I do agree with the addition that you made to Winne's perspective. Siddartha's main problem with his ego was that he could not get rid of it. This plagued him with even more desire defeating his purpose entirely until he actually could look past it.

  55. Belief System is a factor that controls your actions and decisions; it is usually your religion, your values, or a rule that you live by. Everyone belief system’s are unique, which means that we value things differently and treat them in our own ways. One common example would be creation myths. In every culture, there are a different way to explain why we are created and who created us. It provides a reason for us to accomplish anything and religion has a major part of it. Religion can guide a person in a clear direction by providing them a positive mind. They will realize their previous errors and would not repeat it again, but it can also affect a person negatively. It is very rare that a person will believe in two different religions at the same time because it may contradict with one another. This will make the person to become stubborn because they will only view the world in one way. They will also become biased, due to their previous learning. It is very important to keep a good balance in your belief system. Hinduism and Buddhism both have similar teaching and values. The three main tenets are Karma, reincarnation, and Nirvana. Karma is the action that will punish the bad action and by doing good it will lead you to reincarnation. After many cycle of Karma and reincarnation, you will reach Nirvana. It is the highest state in the religion and it is also the final destination. These are the factors that Siddhartha experienced while traveling with the Samaras. In the novel Siddhartha, “I believe, no such thing as what we call ‘learning…only knowledge: it is everywhere.” (pg 18) It is a quote from Siddhartha; he does not have a desire of Nirvana because he understands that the only way to achieve his destination is to end suffering. There are many things that Siddhartha left behind for his knowledge. His life was changed completely and he left his family to go on his journey. He believes that he can achieve Nirvana by becoming a better person.

  56. People's views on how things in the world came to be, the way they live their lives to reach a certain goal, their actions , and what they value is a belief system. A positive influence is that belief systems unify people and builds a community of people with the same beliefs and thoughts, which can, most of the time, lead to peaceful relationships. A negative influence is that not everyone in the world has the same belief systems and can lead to disagreements, arguments, and can turn into violent acts such as violent protests and war. The main tenets of Hinduism are idol worship, devotion, dharma, and discipline (http://hinduism.about.com/od/hinduism101/a/tenets.htm) and for Buddhism the main tenets are the Four Noble Truths [1. Life means suffering, 2. The origin of suffering is attachment, 3. The cessation of suffering is attainable, 4. The path to the cessation of suffering.] (http://www.thebigview.com/buddhism/fourtruths.html) Siddhartha follows the tenets of both, Hinduism and Buddhism, according to the book Siddhartha by Hermann Hesse. Siddhartha follows idol worship by venerating Buddha. (page 27; paragraph #4) He shows devotion by living the life of ascetics and giving up the life of a Brahmin. (page 13; paragraph 1) Siddhartha shows his dharma and discipline by doing whatever it takes and overcoming tough obstacles and situations to find enlightenment. (page 14 paragraph 1)This connects to the Four Noble Truths and what it says about suffering. Siddhartha's belief system impacts his life in many ways, one of them being having to going against his fathers wishes of being a Brahmin and becoming a samana, which is a huge change of lifestyles.
    - I agree with Peter on how belief systems can have both a negative and positive impact, because it all depends on people's views on the beliefs. I also agree with Aileen's answer on how belief systems can be positive. Since belief systems have been around for a long time, they are usually passed down to others and they learn from their ancestors on how to live a good live and what they believe is right and wrong in life.

  57. Belief systems are similar to a life style. People live their lives based off of belief systems. A positive thing about belief systems is that they give people a reason to believe, they give people something to believe in. Although, a negative thing is that it may lead some people the wrong way due to force. People may feel the need to do something they don't want to do. The main beliefs in Buddhism and Hinduism is dharma, karma, reincarnation and meditation. The belief is that if you live a good life and do your duty, when you die you will be reincarnated and come back to life in a higher ranking then before. Siddhartha follows these beliefs. For example, page fourteen states "Siddhartha practiced unselfing, practiced meditation, according to the samana rules." Siddhartha life is impacted by his belief because it teaches him more. "Siddhartha learned much among the samana's, he learned to follow many paths away from his ego." (Page fifteen) He will learn to become a better person and life his duty due to his belief system.

  58. A belief system can refer to a religion, a world view, or a philosophy. A belief system can be one of our most powerful assets or our worst enemy. A positive effect is that they essentially make up who we are. Belief systems are one of the major factors that can get us through situations; however it can have a downside to our lives. People create negative beliefs and as a result can end up having low self esteem. Religion has also been the cause of almost every war since the beginning of time. The main tenets of Hinduism and Buddhism include emphasizing the nature of the world and the role of karma. They believe in compassion and non violence towards all living beings. Both philosophies believe in certain spiritual practices like meditation, concentration, or cultivation. “Govinda,” Siddhartha spoke to his friend, “Govinda, dear friend, come with me to the banyan tree, let us meditate.” (7) This quote refers to Siddhartha getting ready to meditate, because it is one of the practices of his belief. Siddhartha’s belief system impacts his life because he follows the religion, hoping to bring him happiness and peace. This proves to be important since his quest takes a lifetime to fulfill.

  59. A belief system could be defined as a gather of ideas that a community of people would live by or believe in and it is reflected in many aspects of living. A positive aspect that a belief system can have on the believers is it the philosophies could be the rules that the community or followers would live or go by. One negative aspect of belief systems is it can limits the way the followers would live their life or look at their world. Followers of both Hinduism and Buddhism believe in dharma (people's duty in life), karma (the actions of one person that will affect their future), moksha/nirvana (free from the cycle of birth and death which is what followers of these religions try to reach), and reincarnation. It is said in the story, "Siddhartha sat absorbed, his eyes rigidly fixed on a very far goal... Thus he sat, wrapped in meditation, thinking om, his soul sent out as an arrow to Brahma...'Tomorrow morning, my friend, Siddhartha will join the samanas. He will become a samana.' Govinda blanched upon hearing those words... as undivertible as the arrow shot from the bow." (page 8 of Siddhartha). As a result of the impact from his religion, Siddhartha makes connection to the Divine through meditation and his belief system is also influencing him to make decisions for him to reach his destiny.

  62. A Belief System is something that a group of people believe in. Most of the time it is defined as a religion. A positive aspect of belief systems is they help bring a group of people together and can form a civilization where everyone believes the same thing. A negative aspect of belief systems is that the group is limited to only one set of ideas and beliefs. The main tenets of Hinduism and Buddhism are a strong respect for nature, dharma and karma (doing your duties to have a better result in life), and reincarnation (the process of being born again). Siddhartha's belief system impacts his life by teaching him loyalty to his religion. "Taught by the eldest of the samanas, Siddhartha practiced unselfing, practiced meditation, according to the samana rules". (page 14 of Siddhartha). Siddhartha is practicing meditation because it is one of the main teachings of his belief system, Buddhism and he is showing loyalty to his beliefs.

  65. A belief system is the way people live and what they value. It can also be called a religion. One positive aspect of a belief system is that it gives them a purpose to live. If there were no belief systems many people wouldn't know what to do with life. One negative aspect of a belief system is one can take advantage of the people and use their belief system for their own purposes. The main tenets that Hinduism and Buddhism have is respecting mother nature, reincarnation, and their duty in life. "Now the father realized that Siddhartha was no longer with him and in his homeland, that had already left him...go into the forest and become a samana. If you find bliss in the forest, then come and teach me bliss." (page 11) Siddhartha's father realized that he can't stop what his son strongly thinks his duty is and he supports him by telling him to teach what he has learn in his journey through the forest. One way that Siddhartha is impacted by is belief system is that everyday they meditate at least once. This is his lifestyle while he was still living with his father and mother. It also caused him to question his belief.

  68. 1) a belief system is a series of rules and guidelines that it's followers must live by. These rules and guidelines can range anywhere from foods you are allowed to eat to holidays you are obligated to celebrate.
    2) Many people use belief systems as something to look to whenever they are ion need of strength or courage. For example, many people in the dark ages followed Christianity in hopes that their afterlife in Heaven would be better than their life on Earth.
Unfortunately, it is not uncommon for people to start fights over belief systems. Since the dawn of time, people have been killed just because they follow a different religion than someone else, an although it is less prominent now, it is still a major issue.
    3) The main tenets of Hinduism and Buddhism are the eightfold path and the four noble truths. They teach people that the world is full of suffering and this suffering is a result of desire for materialistic possessions. If one learns to meditate and want nothing more out of life than they already have, they will finally find true happiness. This is why Siddhartha spends so much time in meditation once he joins the samanas. He wishes to be enlightened and believes the only way to do so is through meditation.
    4) Siddhartha's belief system puts an emotional wall between him and his father. When he requests permission to join the Samanas, he receives a negative response of "I do not wish to hear that request a second time from your lips"(9). Siddhartha protests for his right to join them however, and his father finally breaks down and, disappointed in his son, sends him off to do as he pleases.

    Response to Peers

I strongly agree with what Shenelle Reddick said about positive and negative aspects of belief systems. People can often band together and form an alliance due to common set of values and beliefs, but it does then restrict them to a single way of thinking, with no opportunity to try things a different way.

I also agree with what Cassidy Charles said about belief systems giving people an answer to common questions that science just can't discover. For example, mankind has been eternally plagued with the question "what is the meaning of life?" and we can always look to our religion for an idea towards the answer. It does, however, bring up some interesting new questions - since we have so many religions, there will be a large multitude of answers to a single question, each one biased to it's own religion. Therefore, one cannot help but wonder which religion teaches truthful concepts and which ones mislead their followers? Is there only one true system of beliefs, or perhaps some strange combination of all religions? these are unique questions that will never be answered by science OR religion.

  69. 1)A belief system is something you follow and live by. A belief system has to do with different cultures and costumes. I also think that a belief system is not only religious but can also be something you strongly believe in and want to make a difference in.
2)One positive influence belief systems have on people is that it gives people something to live by and it can keep certain groups of people organized. One negative influence belief systems have on people is that in certain religions people feel like its OK to enforce violence and say another belief system and other beliefs are wrong because its not what they believe and it causes chaos.
    3) Hinduism promotes four different goals. Like other aspects of Hinduism, the goals are split between those emphasized by the "life is good" perspective and those emphasized by the "life is bad" perspective. The three life-affirming goals are Dharma (virtue), Artha (success) and Kama (pleasure), while the life-negating goal is that of moksha (release). (website- http://uwacadweb.uwyo.edu/religionet/er/hinduism/HRLIFE.HTM) Buddhism has a founder who was Siddhartha Gautama and the goal of Buddhism is for the self to attain a state of total enlightenment which includes but is not limited to having inner peace 24/7. A core belief in Buddhism is the Three Truths that allow an individual to move down that spiritual path towards enlightenment and understanding. Buddhists follow the four noble truths the Eightfold Path and the five precepts.
    4) Siddhartha's belief system impacts his life by maturing him and in one point of the book he realizes hes not a youth anymore. on page 36 he realizes that he no longer will be learning from anyone else. He's going to learn who he is as Siddhartha and that past young boy is gone. He is living to find himself the secret of Siddhartha.

  76. A belief system is a way of life and is also the structure of life. A belief system is what people believe in and practice. Such as what one eats, how one behaves and how one acts is all affected by the belief system that one grew up following.
A positive influence belief systems can have on people is how people treat others and what one does. For example, God in Christianity loves all living things. When someone or something needs help God would try his best to help. So many people would follow what their God will do so, they would help others. A negative influence belief system would have on people would be thinking that one's religion is better than other religions. For example, during a time in history Christians tried to spread Christianity. Those who didn't want to practice Christianity was forced to or violence was used. At one time the Christians thought that their religion was the best.
The main tenets of Buddhism are Eightfold path and the Four Noble Truth. The main teaching is lose the feeling of desire and one will achieve peace. The main tenets of Hinduism are dharma, karma, moksha, and reincarnation. Dharma, the duties in life and karma is the good things one has done in life and followed their duties in life. Moksha is heaven and reincarnation is when one's soul gets a body and gets to live again. Siddhartha follows his dharma by studying all kinds of subject. His duty is to became a Brahmin so, he must study to become one.
Siddhartha's belief system impacts his life because all the Brahmins and books can not answer his question. Is there another path then this one? Is there only one path? He himself couldn't find it that is why he felt so unhappy and unsatisfied even though he has so many knowledge. However, when he started to meditate, Siddhartha found peace and found another path he can take.

  82. A belief system is what an individual practices that relates to what they believe in. It helps gives them a guidance to refer off from on how they should live their life. It can also have its’ positives and negatives influence on the lives of their followers. In some belief systems, it could benefit the followers and also others that don’t follow it as well. For example, it can be a system where the person believes that doing good things will help lead to a better and healthy lifestyle. This will lead them to being more aware of their actions and possibly helping others out, which can help shape them up into being a better person. In some cases the belief system that one would follow, would be really strict. It can limit them to what they can do in life that could affect the person’s goal or dream for the future. The main tenets of Hinduism and Buddhism would be that they both revolve around the awareness of dharma, karma, moksha (perfection), and reincarnation (each person lives multiple lives on Earth). Dharma would be ones duty in life and if they fulfill it, they earn positive karma, which are the person’s good and bad actions in life. Hindus believed that earning as much positive karma will help them in being reincarnated as someone with a higher ranking in the next life and the goal is for the soul of the person to reach moksha. Siddhartha can relate to the tenets based on what he has been doing that would help him achieve in the future as a Brahmin. “Siddhartha had long been taking part in the conversations of the sages, practicing the verbal battle with Govinda, practicing the art of contemplation with Govinda, the service of meditation.” (page 3). This shown that he had already been working his way up in becoming a Brahmin, which would be his dharma, but soon it changes later on due to his feelings for the way things are. Siddhartha’s belief system had impacted his life by that what he truly believed in had influenced him to turn to the opposite road of what his father wanted him to do in the first place, the road in becoming a Brahmin. Now he wants to go on a journey himself that will answer all his questions that he wouldn’t have been able to figure out the answers to if he kept going on with his life, basing it all on the teachings of others. Making this way of life not pleasing to him at all.

1.I agree with Winnie on her definition of a belief system. She thoroughly explained how it connects with an individual. I think it’s also true on how she said, “It gives people reassurance on life and sometimes even after life. It represents your values, and sometimes gives reason to the unexplainable”. Through the belief systems that a person would follow, it could even show the type of person they are and how they think of themselves and their surroundings.

2.I agree with Elizabeth on how Siddhartha was following Buddhism and Hinduism when he followed the samanas. Just like what the Four Noble Truths stated for Buddhism, all life is full of suffering, pain, and sorrow, and the only cure for suffering is to overcome desire. From what Siddhartha was going through in his journey with the samanas, he experienced challenges and obstacles others would’ve to overcome on a daily basis that dealt with suffering. He had learned to overcome the situation just like what Elizabeth had stated in her answer.

A belief system is like something that someone believes in that other people may not like or agree in. Its a system where people would do what they would want to like who they believe in & etc. Belief systems allows people to express their own thoughts and let other knows what they think is right or wrong. The main tenet of Buddhism is of people to no longer have any desires so they wouldn't suffer at all from what they WANT. And the main tenet of Hinduism is dharma (the right thing) , karma (what goes around comes around) , & reincarnation. In Siddhartha's life, Siddhartha decided to do things his way instead of following in his father's footsteps. Siddhartha isn't truly content with his lifestyle and he wants to break free to fill the vessel that's not full with knowledge. Siddhartha decides to meditate to erase his desires. Through meditation, he figures that he still hadn't have enough knowledge and feels the need to gain more while Govinda feels that they have already learned a lot (p 14-17).

I agree with Way Sey Leung that a belief system is what people believe in and it determines the way they act in life. Giving an example adds on to show what a belief system is.

I also agree with Wendy Huang about destiny & the way Siddhartha's life would develop in. Usually in most of the books that we've read (Sundiata, The Arabian Nights, The Odyssey) destiny & fate plays a big role in opening the world to the hero & leading them to development.

A belief system dictate what one eats, wears and religious views.A positive influence that belief systems can have on people is the guidance through life. For example give their life a meaning and giving them a mission to accomplish in life. A negative influence belief systems can have on their followers is the thought of being greater than someone else. For example, In the earky ages alot of Christians thought they were better than the native americans just because they had a religon. 88. A belief system is a person's or a group of people's guidance in life and teaches them how to live and sometimes sets boundaries and limits to what they cant and cant do. A belief system is sometimes used to explain why a group of people celebrate certain holidays or special occasions. A belief system represents and symbolize their values. One positive influence that a belief system has is that it gives the person hope and it gives them something to believe and represent them and set them apart from the rest. One negative influence is that a belief system might cause conflict between the people who follow the belief system and the people who may disagree with it, these two groups may go to violence if their points aren't proven. The main principles of Buddhism and Hinduism is to follow your dharma to get good karma so you may be reincarnated into a better social class. Meditation which helps them loose desire which would bring less pain and suffering into their life. Some of these principles or tenets relate with Siddhartha's life like when "Siddhartha practiced unselfing, practiced meditation, according to the Samana rules" (pg 14) he practiced his meditation and his loss for desire and possessions. One way Siddhartha's belief system impacted his life was " Siddhartha stood silent in the vertical blaze of the sun, burning with pain, burning with thirst, and he stood till he felt no pain or thirst." (pg 14) Siddhartha learned how to not desire anything and he also learned that focusing and going in deep meditation he had no need for water or shade. His belief system impacted his life by showing him to be humble and selfless and that by having those qualities he would reach inner peace.

One negative influence is that the followers might do something that others think is not good and this could lead to many problems. The main tenets of hinduism and buddhism are karma, dharma, and reincarnation. Siddhartha meditated which showed that he believed in buddhism. His beleif system impacts his life because he gave up on his belongings to not suffer pain.

  93. I agree with what Winnie said about belief systems "It represents your values, and sometimes gives reason to the unexplainable." I really believe that belief systems do help explain the unexplainable, Like why would so many people follow these beliefs without knowing if they are true? that is what seems unexplainable

  94. Belief systems determines how people live their daily lives. There are many aspects to belief systems such as what the followers wear, eat, listen to, praise, etc. A positive impact belief systems have on their followers is that it gives their followers morals. People can know what is right and wrong, and it gives them something to live for or to achieve. A negative aspect though is that people can follow their belief so much that they can be doing something wrong, but they don't see it because according to their belief system they are doing the right thing. The main teachings of hinduism and buddhism is to respect nature and to have no wants or desires. For example, in Siddharta, the samanas live with nature in the forest. The book also says, "Overcomming of pain, of hunger, of thirst..."(p.15) Siddhartha was learning to have no desires for anything including food and water. Siddharthas belief system impacts his life by giving him a routine to live by in order for him to reach the ultimate nirvana.

  95. I agree with Winnie when she says,"...And sometimes gives reason to the unexplainable." Belief systems do explain the unexplainable. Many cultures have creation myths that explain how the world was made. Many culture's belif systems also give explanations to things such as why there is darkess nd light, why there are natural disasters, why it rains, etc.

  96. **SORRY IT'S TAKEN SO LONG TO RESPOND. I'VE BEEN WORKING ALMOST NON-STOP**
    Study Question Answers:
1)In my opinion a belief system is something that someone elects to believe in. Depending on how strongly they believe/have faith it can affect all sorts of aspects in someone's life. It can affect how they dress, eat, and behave. For example, in some belief systems, modesty and courtesy are heavily encouraged.

2)A positive influence a belief system can have is giving people the ability to hope and have faith. Some belief systems encourage to never give up hope on anything and that life will eventually resolve itself.
A negative influence can be that some belief systems completely dictate the followers' lives. This can lead to them developing a power-hungry look on life. They can develop dictating personalities.

3)Buddhism: -A main tenet of Buddhism is right understanding (http://www.bible.ca/cr-buddhism.htm). Siddhartha achieved that in the novel by being able to understand that desires are unimportant and that what you want is not as important as helping those who are suffering or in need. If you put thoughts of desire and want ahead of helping others it results in karma
-Another main tenet is right thought (http://www.bible.ca/cr-buddhism.htm). Siddhartha is always thinking of how to achieve "nirvana" and be free thoughts filled with desires and wants to alleviate suffering.
Hinduism: - A main tenet of Hinduism is that all humans are divine (http://hinduism.about.com/od/basics/a/principles.htm). That could mean that in essence all humans are precious and need to be protected and valued.

4)Siddhartha thought that he was meant to be something greater in his life. He then found his own belief system. The belief system he has has led him all over the world, constantly meditating and learning, while being separated from his family. His life is dedicated to learning and helping others. His desires and wants are not important or appeased in any way.

  97. I really admire the first two sentences of what Winnie posted about a belief system. I completely agree that many belief systems provide guidance in peoples lives. It also gives them deep and emotional reassurance about the things they do and the things they have to endure like hurt and pain. I also admire that she put "after life" because some people don't often consider what happens after we die. I really enjoyed her response.

  98. I really enjoyed how Rima said that a positive influence that can result from a belief system is that the followers have a foundation to depend on. I completely agree because if you don't have something like faith in your life to fall back on during the hard times, it is easy to lose your way. It is very easy to get discouraged and become dependent on something really bad like drugs or alcohol. I think her positive influence is a great one.

  100. A belief system is a set of morals or values a person may follow and live by. Some people may see belief systems as a way to explain the world around them. One positive influence a belief system can have on their followers is to give meaning and something to live for. A negative influence a belief system can have on their followers is that it limits a person to one view which could lead to big problems. For example Hitler’s beliefs led him to killing many Jewish people. The main tenets of Hinduism and Buddhism are dharma, karma, and the Eightfold Path. Karma is the idea that actions can affect other things. Dharma is person’s duty in life. The Eightfold Path describes the way to end suffering. He mediates to calm his mind and to clear his mind of suffering and desire. “Siddhartha had a goal, a single one: to become empty – empty of thirst, empty of desire, empty of dreams, empty of joy and sorrow” (pg 13). Siddhartha’s belief system impacts him by making him set out to look for a way to reach nirvana.

A belief system has a great impact on people's lives. For example, people might dress differently, eat differently, and speak differently. One positive influence a belief system can have on a follower is that it gives them a goal in life to continue living on happily. One negative influence a belief system can have on a follower is that sometimes, the followers might be to into their belief system that they don't know that they are doing something wrong. The main tenets of Hinduism and Buddhism are karma, and dharma. Karma is when someone does something good, in return, he or she will get baack something good. If they do something bad, then in return, they get back something bad. One way that Siddhartha's belief system impacts his life is that he mediates to forget about his desires so he doesn't have to go though pain.

1)A belief ststem is something people follow to gain knowledge, achieve goals and to explain the before and afterlife of people and even the world.
2)One positive influence belief systems have is to give people something to live by.One negative influence is that people only think on one or limited ideas and won't change their mind quite easily.
3)Hinduism and Buddhism are similar since their followers believe in many similar ways. They both believe that karma is the sum of a person's actions in their current and previous states, which will be viewed as deciding their fate in the future (http://www.experiencefestival.com/a/Karma/id/179491). They also believe in dharma which is your goal in life. Moksha is perfection and is achieved when you have good karma only and when you completed your duty (dharma). Siddhartha has been following all this in order to reach his dharma of becoming a Brahmin. "Siddhartha had long been taking part in the conversations of the sages, practicing the verbal battle with Govinda, practicing the art of contemplation with Govinda, the service of meditation"(3).
The differences is that Hindus believe in the god Atman, and Buddists don't believe in a god at all.Buddhists believe in a prophet, the Buddha. "He already understood how to know Atman in his innermost being..."(3).
4)Siddhartha's belief system caused him to be separated from his family and to teach and spread his belief's worldwide with no desires at all when seeing temptations.

I agree with Kayla Williams with the influences of belief systems since people need to experiment different ways of living and ideas in life in order to grow as a person. This might change people's view towards you and might cause you to make bad choices.

  110. A belief system is the way people believe and live their life by. They do certain things differently than others according to their belief system. The things they wear and eat are different. People with different belief systems value different things.
One positive influence belief systems can have on the lives of their followers is teaching them what's right from wrong so they won't be doing wrong things. This a positive influence because people will know what is right for them to do. One negative influence belief systems can have on the lives of their followers is teaching them something bad. Teaching them to do something that will harm someone else and being a benefit or harm to themselves.
The main tenets of Hinduism are karma, dharma, and moksha. It teach to treat others the way you want to be treated, doing good deeds in life, and having your spirit to be moving on and leaving the body. Siddhartha wants his soul to be sent out as an arrow to Brahma as if he wants moksha to occur. The main tenets of Buddhism are the Four Noble Truth, nirvana, and recarnation. It teaches people that all desire creates suffering, the Eight Fold Path, and a peaceful state where suffering is eliminated. Siddhartha's thoughts was creating his suffering because he have so many questions and there was no one to answer him. Siddhartha connects to Buddhism's Four Noble Truths because his desire for the answers creates his suffering. The basic beliefs of Buddhism includes meditation and that is what Siddhartha do everyday.
Siddhartha's belief system impacts his life because he meditates as if he wants to achieve nirvana which is a peaceful state where suffering is eliminated. "Siddhartha had spoke to his friend, "Govinda, dear friend, come with me to the banyan tree, let us meditate." They went to the banyan tree, they sat down..." (7). As shown in the quote, Siddhartha's belief system has impacted his life because he meditates as if he wants to achieve something.

I disagree with Way Sey Leung that people thinking that one religion is better than other religions is a negative influence that belief systems have on people. It can also be a positive influence and not only thinking it as a negative influence. If people do not believe that their religion is better than others, religions wouldn't have been spread around the world and new ones wouldn't be found. The new religions could have been a benefit to its followers and others. The followers of other religions would try to improve it just so that they can prove that their religion is better to others.
I disagree with what Justin Beskin said that both Hinduism and Buddhism believe in many gods. I agree that Hinduism believe in many gods, but not for Buddhism. Hinduism is polytheistic which is the belief in many gods. Buddhism is an ethic system which is the moral beliefs and/or values one lives by. It is basically teachings of how one should be. It depends on the follower of Buddhism to determine whether or not there are gods.

  111. 1.A belief system is the way a culture dresses, the food they eat and the holidays that they celebrate. They have a code in which they must follow. For example Muslims must pray five times a day and Christian people have to go to church.
2.One positive belief system is being monotheistic and believing in one God. If you beleive in one God you will believe in an afterlife. A negative influence could be atheism which means not beleieving in a God. You will feel like you had no purpose in life and when you di you will become ashes.
3.The main tenets of Hinduism and Buddhism is reincarnation. This means that when you die you will turn into something. If you do something good you will be reincarnated into something good. This can relate to Siddhartha beacuse he wants to be a samana(8) and be a better person and help people out.
4.Siddhartha wants to be a samana but his dad does not want him to be one. His dad doesnt want him to be one(9).He will be apart from the family. He wants to help the people around him.

  113. A belief system is defined with various definitions. A belief system exemplifies the political or religious faith that an individual values deeply. For example, many people that go to a Catholic Church, they believe in a higher being. In addition, a belief system is a foundation to your life, to your soul and your perception of the world. Lastly, a person’s creed signifies their daily lifestyle, which is also sign of their beliefs. In more terms, a belief system is a path to follow throughout your life, which is your point of view on things.

    ReplyDelete
  114. One positive influential belief system for someone to live of their followers is faith and conviction. For example, when believing in faith you can become very powerful, and expand the insight on life. When focusing on life, with a positive attitude, their will be many other ways to succeed. Not only will it be a conflict, but it will help so others can follow you as well. When other individuals notice how much the person evolved by believing in themselves, and they are gaining the golden door of success, their will be other great opportunities coming by. Also, the foulest influence to look forward to is rebellion, and being a combat. In order, to make the lives of their followers at ease, this isn’t great because fighting similar to Hinduism is based on desire, and isn’t good for the mind, the more you are reluctant to not doing something, you more a person will comprehend something better. It is exactly similar to Buddhism, which comprehends the mind better and the less of desire.
There are a variety of tenets of both Hinduism and Buddhism. For example, Buddhism is based on peace, meditation, and relaxation. Firstly, in order to practice Buddhism, you must follow meditation because contemplation is the key to relax yourself, and not ponder any competition or desire. Secondly, reincarnation expresses where humans are reborn after they died, and they also believe that humans go through the stages of birth, life, death and rebirth. Additionally, Buddhists cease the suffering when understanding Nirvana and the Eightfold Path is a list that completes the anguish. On the other hand, Hinduism is the belief of Brahman which is a life force that helps existence. Secondly, karma is one of the main tenets of Hinduism because life has been supported by the caste system. The caste system is very strict and is what has many people ambitious to pursue their dharma before they receive pain throbbing karma. Finally, Hinduism relates to Siddhartha because Siddhartha realizes that even though he is Indian and he is following to live the rules by being a sons Brahman. Suddenly, he decides that there isn’t any way of a clear mind following Hinduism, so he concludes that he should tag along the life of Samanas instead. As said in this quote, “But even he, the man who knew so much: did he live in bliss, was he at peace? Was he not also a seeker, a thirster? Did he not always and always again have to drink…from the sacrifices, from the books, from the dialogues of the Brahmins? (7),” this quote symbolizes how his father, the Brahmin isn’t really living in peace with the apprehension of Hinduism. Which helps him escape from the calamity and he discovers that maybe a Samana might be beneficial for him.
One belief system that impacts Siddhartha’s life is religion. Siddhartha has so many calamities that he can’t find the passageway to peace. Not only is Siddhartha having trouble with joy in his life, he is also having problems with others because he isn’t focused on his own life, since he pleases everyone else, since they get the vibe of him being very content. In reality, there is no content in his brain, so when Siddhartha inquires to his father if he becomes a Samana, the father nearly is displeased. Siddhartha wants to seek that religion because he knows that this will help him become a stronger person, and make him develop a valiant perception on the world. Overall, Siddhartha might evolve himself because his thoughts were deteriorating his personality of being tranquil.

  117. A belief system can be a set of ideas, an idea, a goal or even multiple goals that a certain person would persue. It's the idea of believing and following, that makes it a belief system, not so much of obeying your "rules". One positive thing that I don't think anyone mentioned was the idea of passing it down, through your family. The past and future generations sharing the same thing in common surely has a positive effect on some people. One negative thing, about belief systems is the fact that people "expect" you to follow your beliefs. Taking it too far can be bad, and can even tear families apart. For example, a member of the family doesn't follow the belief system of the family. He or she is then shunned or punished. The main tenets of Hinduism and Buddhism are dharma(What is right)karma(ones actions)meditation to achieve nirvana(a state of peace). After doing what is right, reincarnation happens, and the cycle repeats. After meditating for 49 days under a tree, Siddhartha puts his needs aside and reaches enlightenment. This shows that he follows the tenets of Hinduism and Buddhism. His curiosity to explore a new meaning of life has resulted in an entire belief system, that now millions of people follow.

    ~~~~~~I strongly agree with Blanca. There shouldn't always be a definite Yes or No answer to whether or not you believe in something, but more of the amount. How much or how little. It should be up to the person to decide.
    ~~~~~~Adding on to what Claudia said, not only does it limit the person's actions and thoughts, it also acts as a barrier to one's social, physical and emotional aspect. Cutting off their happiness from life because of it.

  122. A belief system teaches values, morals, and basically something that can help guide someone through their life. A postive aspect of a belief system is that it may give people hope in their lifetime. It gives people hope of a happy afterlife, reincarnation, or etc, depending on the belief system they follow. A negative aspect for a belief system is that some might let their belief system control their decisions and their life. It's unhealthy to rely on one thing for so much(in this case, a belief system). The main tenents of both Hinduism and Buddhism is the idea of reincarnation and karma. They also both believe in cleansing the soul through meditation. Siddartha's father in the book, who is a follwer of Hinduism as a Brahmin, "wash[es] away sin every day, strive for purification every day, every day anew"(p.7). Since Siddhartha is determined to becoming a samana and learning their ways, he dedicates his days to meditating, learning to feel nothing, fasting, and practicing Buddhism that is taught by elder samanas.

"A negative influence that belief system has on people is that it only gives people a certain way to live their life. They disregard other belief systems because they would think their own belief system is the correct way of life." -Cindy
I agree with what Cindy wrote. There are people out there who try to lure people to believe in their belief system, because they believe their way, is the right way. 124. A belief system is a combination of one's morals, ethics and things they believe in. One positive aspect of a belief system would be that it allows a person to better understand what they want in life and what they may believe in. A negative aspect of a belief system would be if the person relies only on that one belief. They will follow only that belief and think all others are wrong or unjust. The main tenet of Buddhism is meditation. They believe that one should not be violent and that meditation can clear the needs of desire and return the body and mind to a relaxed and restful state; "Then the father said: 'It is not fitting for a Brahmin to speak angry and violent words. But indignation moves my heart...'" (pg.9). The main tenet of Hinduism is reincarnation. Hinduists believe that if they do good deeds, dharma, then they will get good karma so they are able to be reborn in their next life as a more prosperous person. Siddhartha's one goal is "...to become empty- empty of thirst, empty of desire, empty of dreams, empty of joy and sorrow." (pg. 13), and to become empty, Siddhartha has to meditate to get rid of all the emotions that run through him and to forget about his problems.

  125. A belief system is a mind set that based on your actions during life it will affect your position after death as in many cases, either going to heaven or hell. Many belief systems are good because they give many people meaning to their lives or in other words a purpose. However many belief systems can get out of hand from mere arguments to devastating wars. In both Buddhism and Hinduism following your dharma to get good karma is a main tenet. The belief is that if you follow your duty in life you will be reincarnated into a higher social class in your next life. Siddhartha follows these beliefs. “taught by the eldest samanas, Siddhartha practiced unselfing, practiced meditation, according to the samana rules" (page 14) Siddhartha’s belief system affects his entire life, he follows his beliefs to the point where he rids himself of all desire so he can reach a further enlightenment (another strong tenet of both Buddhism and Hinduism).

    1. What is a belief system?
A belief system is a set of ideas, values, or morals. It can be a religion or philosphy that one follows. It might explain life, how we came about, and other natural phenomenom.

    2. Describe one positive influence belief systems can have on the lives of their followers and one negative influence belief systems can have on the lives of their followers.
One positive influence that belief systems can have on the lives of their followers is organization. Within a belief system, there is structure. For some belief systems, such as Islam, you may have to pray at certain times or fast at certain times. One negative influence belief systems can have on the lives of their followers is that it can be too constricting on one. It can cause it's followers to live their lives only by how the belief system wants them to even if it brings pain and suffering upon them.

    3. What are the main tenets of Hinduism and Buddhism? Make connections to Siddhartha in your explanation of the tenets.
The main tenets, or principles and beliefs, of Hinduism are dharma, karma, reincarnation, ahmisa, moksha, the atman, the Caste System, the Brahman, and reaching Nirvana. Through dharma and karma, a Hindu can reach Nirvana. The tenets of Buddhism are the Four Noble Truths, the Eightfold Path, and reincarnation. Buddhism does not follow the caste system. By following the Eightfold Path and acknowledging the Four Noble Truths, a Buddhist can reach Nirvana. In the introduction of the novel, Siddhartha is a Hindu and believes in the caste system. However, as the story continues, he begins to doubt Hinduism and converts to Buddhism.

    4. Describe and explain one way in which Siddhartha's belief system impacts his life.
One way Siddhartha's belief system impacts his life is when he converts from Hinduism to become a Samana. He leaves his family behind and his life as a prince to live in the streets. He brings along Govinda on this journey. Siddhartha longed to be empty. "Siddhartha had a goal, a single one: to becme empty- empty of thirst, empty of desire, empty of dreams, empty of joy and sorrow" (p. 13). He converts in order to become empty and gain knowledge. However he does not gain knowledge from being a samana. Soon, he informs the old samana that he does not want to be a samana any longer and departs.

I disagree with Rima Issa's response of "A belief system is a set of rules put in place in order to help people achieve their goal in life." A belief system is not necessarily built to help people achieve their goal in life. It can be to help one live their life with standards. Belief systems don't necessarily help people achieve their goal in life, but they help people live their life.
I agree with Victor Acevedo's response of "Siddhartha's belief system caused him to be separated from his family and to teach and spread his belief's worldwide with no desires at all when seeing temptations." It was Siddhartha's beliefs that spread him farther from his family. His desire to become a samana weakened his relationship with his father. It's not wrong for Siddhartha to follow what he believes in and he has come to the realization that what he believes in is worth fighting for.

  131. A belief system is how people percieve the world and their way of living in it. It provides structure to life set by certain customs and values. A positive influence it has on its believers is that it gives people direction to a good life the way they believe it should be lived and something to believe in such as faith and guidance through struggles. A negative influence it has on society is that it can bring conflict and disunity. Different believers will often neglect other belief systems because they believe they are living the right way in life and view others as wrong. The main tenets of buddhism and hinduism the role of dharma/karma, meditation, reincarnation and emphasize the importance of nature. Buddhism also believes that to truly end all suffering one must end all desire. "Siddhartha stood silent in the vertical blaze of the sun, burning with pain, burning with thirst and he stood till he felt no pain or thirst." Among following the samanas, Siddhartha has come to feel no desire. He has also practiced unselfing and meditation. By practicing these tenets Siddhartha shows his devotion to both belief systems that have already made impact and are leading him to the right path.

I agree with Carmelinda that contemplation is the key to relax yourself, and not pondering competition or desire, doing so brings you at peace with yourself and your surroundings which has brought to me to the realization that it is an important tenet which she mentioned that many others didn't.

I disagree with what Ka Yan said when she said a negative influence in belief systems is that it can teach them something bad that can be both harmful to themselves or others. Belief systems are about the way of living life right from wrong and/or accomplishing something. That wouldn't be possible if someone is living in a way of life that would cause them harm. If a belief system is teaching you the right way to live, then living in danger should be wrong.

  132. 1 )A belief system is something that everyone has in their life. Everyone has their own beliefs because they have different perspective of what is wrong and right. Almost everything you do is a belief system because you choose your daily actions in life. An example would be brushing your teeth everyday, your beliefs is cleanliness.
2)One positive influence belief systems can have on the lives of their followers is leading them to doing the right thing. Just like how Buddhism believe in being calm and not wanting money. Some people desire money and that cause many deaths to people. If people follow Buddhism then there would be less fights and deaths in the world.Desire will get you nowhere. One negative influence belief systems can have on the lives of their followers is pain and suffering. Some beliefs requires sacrificing humans and that's not a good thing. Every person's lives is important and should be treated with respect. Also, parents would force some of their children to like something they hate just to respect their religion.
3)Hinduism and Buddhism share many beliefs such as reincarnation, dharma, and karma. but they also have differences because Hinduism believe in caste system while Buddhism doesn't. Buddhism believe that everyone should be treated the same.Siddhartha is just like Buddhism, they both believe in meditation. In the book it says "He followed the path of unselfing through meditation"(15).
4)Siddhartha's belief system impacts his life because he had to go on this journey so he could become a samana.Siddhartha had to give up his family to go on this journey.

  134. I agree with Jason that sometimes parents can take their religion too seriously and can be very harmful to you.I think parents should just let their children do what makes them happy and not get too serious.

I agree with Kan Yan that some beliefs can help people lead to doing positive actions and make them keep out of trouble. This can help make your life better.

  135. **I decided to make it easier for you, so I am going to make paragraphs in the spaces, at first it didn't work.

1)A belief system is defined with various definitions.

2)One positive influential belief system for someone to live of their followers is faith and conviction.

  136. 3) There are a variety of tenets of both Hinduism and Buddhism.

  137. Belief systems are what guide people through making decisions and through life. They contain values, ideas , and morals. One positive influence belief systems can have on the lives of its followers is that it can help them find a meaning to life and guide them through it. One negative influence belief systems can of on the lives of their followers is that they lose their individuality and start to do everything their belief system tells them to do.
Hinduism and Buddhism are two belief systems that are similar yet different. Both share the similar ideas of karma and dharma. Buddhists follow the idea of asceticism. This relates to Siddhartha and the samanas(8). The samanas believe in asceticism. Siddhartha's belief system impacted his life in which he sticks to it and stays ascetic.

  138. I agree with Elizabeth Bonilla because he has learned to forget his desires and be desire-less.

I agree with Kevin because we all do have perspectives on the rights and wrongs in life and those are belief systems.

  139. I agree with Carol, a belief system does give someone hope in their lifetime. In Buddhism, when you have good karma you will achieve Nirvana which means someone has achieved a perfect state of mind.

  140. I agree with Kayla Paula, a belief system can cause neglect towards other belief systems. This happens because a belief system can teach something opposite than the other, which will result in people thinking some belief systems are bad.

  141. I agree with what Burcu Kandaz had said, "a negative thing is that it may lead some people the wrong way due to force." In my opinion, this is so true because some people tend to be greatly influenced by others. Some of these influences can have a negative effect to themselves and society.

I like the quote Bryanna chose to show how Siddhartha's belief system impacts his life. It shows he will sacrifice anything to reach the ultimate nirvana.

  142. 1)A belief system is made of values and ideas that a group of people follow or believe in. Most belief systems are based on a individuals culture and religion.

2)One positive influence belief systems have on their followers is faith. With all of their faith they always have something to believe in. This helps give them hope during difficult times in their lives. One negative influence belief systems can have on their followers is how they put it in front of everything else going on in their lives. Some times people do things that are wrong or put themselves in harm because its part of their belief system. For example some belief systems require young women to be forced into marriage at a young age or other systems force people to isolate themselves from everyone they love like family and friends.

3)The main tenets of Hinduism is idol worship, reincarnation, karma, dharma, and moksha. They believe that you should live your life according to the dharma that way you will get good karma and get a better life in your next one. Buddhism tenets include the dharma, meditation, and the belief that you desire for materialistic things and power will cause you to suffer. They believe the only way to get to everlasting happiness is to follow your life according to the dharma and rid youself of any desires.siddhartha connected to buddhism when he went to join the ascetics and went to find "bliss" and learn how to rid himself of any desires to keep himself from suffering.

4)Siddharthas belief system impacted his life a lot when he isolated himself from his family and gave up everything he had to find peace and become a samana. He commited to his beliefs and sacraficed everything for his belief system. "siddhartha had a goal, a single one: to become empty of thirst, empty of desire, empty of dreams, empty of joy and sorrow. To die away from himself, no longer be self, to find peace with an emptied heart, to be open to miracles in unselfed thinkingaa: that was his goal" (13)

  143. I agree with abdul when he said that peoples belief systems can make them loose their individuality. When people have to follow a set of rules or live their life a certain way according to their belief system they can forget who they are. Following their beliefs sometimes leaves people with no time to express who they really are.

I also agree with Elizabeth Saballos when she said that a positive aspect of belief systems is how it unites people. Religions and cultures help bring people with the same beliefs and ideas together so they can share their thoughts. They help form friendships and positive communities.

  144. 1) A belief system is something a group of people believe in. Many countries either believe in the same god as another country or a different one. Many belief systems are opposed by another so as a result, there are many belief systems that exist in the world today.
    2) A belief system can impact its followers alot since it can bring them prosperity or dispair. A positve effect of belief systems on their followers is it can bring friendship between many people. Since alot of people can believe in the same god, they might interact with each other and create big friendships between one another. It also has a negative affect because if there are a variety of restrictions that one cannot endure, it can cause them to suffer alot instead of having a happy life.
    3) The main tenets of Hinduism and Buddhism is that both believe in reincarnation and perfection. It takes many steps to achieve the goal of perfection, or known as Nirvana. In Hinduism, people must work hard and do as many positive things as possible in their life so they reincarnate to a higher class until they reach perfection. In Buddhism, one must end their desire and hatred over things if they don't want to suffer and gain perfection of true peace. In the book, Siddhartha, it is shown that Siddhartha strives to find true peace in himself and he tries to end his desire and hatred over such things. He didn't mind if he was cheated or if he was poor. He begged for food everyday without desire in order to not suffer. He becomes a Samana to learn about true peace inside one self and achieve Nirvana.
    4) Siddhartha's belief system impacts his life because he learned not to desire and hate anything so he follows this in his whole life. Even when he went to civilization, he never desired better clothes or food. He even felt regret when he feels his heart is suffering like when he becomes wealthy and finds his love with Kamala. He lived through his own belief system and it impacted alot of people as well.
