1.Imperialism is basically when one civilization tries to expand and conquers other civilizations.
2.Imperialism can have different effects on society. A positive effect imperialism can have is it can make the conquering civilization bigger and stronger than smaller ones. Imperialism can also have a negative effect on the conquered civilizations. Those conquered civilizations could be angry about being conquered, rebel, and start a war for their land.
    3. The role of imperialism in the short story is the English seem to be in control of an Indian town.Orwell interprets imperialism as "an evil thing and the sooner I chucked up my job and got out of it the better".

    1) Imperialism is like ruling over people or places through colonization, military power, economic or political power.
    2) A positive effect of imperialism would be the expansion of the roman empire where roads, technology, expanded which later helped Europe.A negative effect of imperialism would be Europeans settling into America which caused the lives of the Native Americans to be ruined/destroyed(?).
    3) In the short story "Shooting an Elephant", it seems that the British is ruling over the Indians in a small town(?). Orwell's opinion on imperialism is that it isn't a good thing. "All this was perplexing and upsetting. For at that time I had already made up my mind that imperialism was an evil thing and the sooner I chucked up my job and got out of it the better. Theoretically – and secretly, of course – I was all for the Burmese and all against their oppressors, the British", this shows Orwell's opinion for this matter and how much he disapprove of it.

1)Imperialism means when one country tries to expand on their rule over other countries.
2)One positive effect of imperialism is that if the people who are trying to expand are kind to their people then it would be a good thing. One negative effect of imperialism is that if the people who are trying to expand don't treat their people nicely then war will break out.
3)The role of imperialism in the short story "Shooting an Elephant" is that the British are ruling over the Indians town. Orwell's opinion on imperialism is that its no good for "both sides". "There were several thousands of them in the town and none of them seemed to have anything to do except stand on street corners and jeer at Europeans". This shows how much Orwell dislikes imperialism.

1.Imperialism means to extend rule over foreign countries.
    2. Positive effect would be because of them ruling another civilization, this can make their civilization a stronger, more larger one. But if that civilization does not want to be ruled over, they would fight back, thus causing war and problems, that is a negative effect.
3.The role of imperialism in "Shooting an Elephant" is the British ruling over an Indian town, "There were several thousands of them in the town and none of them seemed to have anything to do except stand on street corners and jeer at Europeans. All this was perplexing and upsetting." and in Orwell's opinion he feels that imperialism is an evil thing. "For at that time I had already made up my mind that imperialism was an evil thing and the sooner I chucked up my job and got out of it the better."

I agree with Anastasio Farag on Orwell's opinion because in a way, it really is no good for both sides, because if they start to fight, people will get hurt on both sides.

I actually agree with everyone's post so far because they really showed how Orwell's opinion had been stated in different ways. Like with Alisia Chan's post, she gave a quote that showed how even if he disapproved, he'd have to leave his job on the low, so no one would know.

1)Imperialism is when a nation, country or any group of people try to expand their govermental ways by dominating other countries, nations.(etc)

2)A negative effect is that while the nation that is trying to expand their rules, they might come to a disagreement with the laws or views that can give a chance to another nation to to take back what was theirs or expand their power as well. A positive impact would be they can gain much power in goverment ways and having the establishment to do things on each terittorial place they claim.

3)The role of imperialism iin the short story "Shooting an Elephant"is that the british make the Indians (whites) feel like there foolish and their life is no more important than theirs. "In Moulmein, in lower Burma, I was hated by large numbers of people – the only time in my life that I have been important enough for this to happen to me." (paragraph 1) I think that Orwell's opinion on imperialism is not good for what is right to do for one who isn't as others, don't do what others expect you to do, i disagree.Orwell has a saying, "For it is the condition of his rule that he shall spend his life in trying to impress the "natives," and so in every crisis he has got to do what the "natives" expect of him." showing what Orwell really feels on imperialsm is and is like for him.

    ~~Peers comment~~

Adding and agreeing with Alisia's comment that a negative impact would be that while expanding it can destroy and ruin others life considering it would be hard for them to deal because it is new to them.

I also agree with Anastasio on defining imperialism, the whole point of imperialism is exactly that expand their rules to other.

    1. Imperialism is when a country expands its power by ruling over foreign countries through force for social, political, or economic reasons.

    2. One positive effect of imperialism is that the countries that have been conquered can work together and share ideas and inventions to improve their countries economy and improve civilization. A negative effect is that the ruling country could be forcing to change a countries beliefs in religion, politics, and their culture.

    3. The role of imperialism in the short story "Shooting and Elephant", is the ruling over an Indian town by the British. Orwell's opinion on Imperialism in India is that ". . . imperialism was an evil thing . . ." (paragraph 2) He also portrays his opinion through the shooting of the wild elephant. The man who shot the elephant symbolized the British and the elephant symbolized the Indian town. The man felt guilty after shooting the elephant, which means he felt guilty working for the British who have treated the Indian town very badly. "In a job like that you see the dirty work of Empire at close quarters. The wretched prisoners huddling in the stinking cages of the lock-ups, the grey, cowed faces of the long-term convicts, the scarred buttocks of the men who had been Bogged with bamboos – all these oppressed me with an intolerable sense of guilt." (paragraph 2)

    Peer Responses ;
    - I agree with Anastasio Farag's answer to how imperialism can have a positive effect. If the conquering country helps their countries they have conquered improve and grow, it is a positive effect on the smaller countries.
    - I also agree with Kayla Williams answer to how imperialism can have a negative effect. The lands being conquered would want to fight for their freedom and start a war. Many people would die in these wars to protect their country, freedom, and fight for their land.

  8. 1. Imperialism is the act of expansion by conquering other countries.

    2. One positive effect is that the powerful side gets things such as land, money, and more power. For example, the Europeans conquered and took the slaves in Africa back to Europe sothat the slaves could work for the Europeans. This example can lead to the negative effect. It may expand the European territory, but the African slaves are suffering from the poor treatment of the Europeans.

    3. "As for the job I was doing, I hated it more bitterly than I can perhaps make clear. In a job like that you see the dirty work of Empire at close quarters." (2nd paragraph) Orwell didn't like his job because he sees bad things that oppose his opinion of peace. The role of imperialism in the story is that the Europeans conquered the indians.

1)Imperialism is when a country expands its land and conqueres other lands.

    2) A positive affect of imperialism is the country that is expanding gets more power, land and money and they can also enslave the citizens of the city they are conqureing to work for them. A negative effect is the conqured conutry is forced to change the rules they live by and their enviornment just because thier land is getting taken over.

    3) In the story "shooting an elephant" the British has taken over an indian village. "... I had already made up my mind that imperialism was an evil thing ..."(paragraph 2). Orwell's opinion on imperialism is that he hate it and that it is evil and that to save himself, he needs to get out of his job.

    1. Imperialism is the policy of expanding your political, economical, and social ideals outside of your territorial boarders into the territories of foreign countries/nations(specifically in modern times).

2.(A) One negative aspect of imperialism is that it puts the mother country in charge, and the people of the colony that is being taken over, are almost always put into the most lowest levels of the class system and are subjected to the lowest degree of work which includes slavery and prostitution.

2.(B) One positive aspect of imperialism is that it gives the colonies of poor economic and government stability, a chance to perhaps merge into the better built societies of the imperialists as equals. Its a life changing experience that could go for better or worse, and is quite a golden opportunity for many people.

    3. The role of imperialism in the short story "Shooting An Elephant", is one of great importance. Imperialism portrays the absolute failure and social demoralization of its ideals. First off, Orwell's opinion on imperialism is clear in the last sentence of the story where he says, "I often wondered whether any of the others grasped that I had done it solely to avoid looking a fool". That is exactly it, as Orwell believes that the Europeans are portraying themselves as superiors in India because they want to avoid looking like fools, they want to avoid looking like the foolish people who invade an already poor country just to have their name stamped on yet another portion of the world map. That is basically his idea of imperialism, even though he may yet to have consciously realized it. He also see’s, by the crowds reaction to his going to shoot the elephant with the rifle, how dull and barbaric this imperialism has made the Indians. To this, Orwell states, “They had not shown much interest in the elephant when he was merely ravaging their homes, but it was different now that he was going to be shot”(paragraph 5, sentence 4). You see, the elephant is supposed to be a sacred animal in India. Also, the elephant was the mount of kings in India. It represents the greatest of warriors, denoting royalty, inner strength and nobility. Due to the collapse of the original Indian government and birth of imperialism, we see the destruction of India’s original royalty and nobility. That is one symbolic aspect of the elephant’s being shot. Also, we see the demoralization of Indian society and their “inner strength”, which is another symbolic aspect of the elephant being shot, as people have lost respect for their true culture due to imperialism, and are now savages who are looking towards the elephant for only meat, displaying a barbaric principal of survival, which is not denoting royalty or inner strength. In all, the role of imperialism in this story is its affects on a once culturally rich society.

-I think what Elizabeth Bonilla meant by her statement of a negative aspect of imperialism is that it could potentially lead to civil war, and I agree with her.

-Yao Jin, your example of a positive aspect of imperialism is unclear, as you are stating a biased argument. Positive and negative aspects should be viewed towards imperialism as a whole(affecting both sides), not just the more powerful side. If the dominating country gets more land and such, what is the positive that the less superior country can count on?

    1. Imperialism is expanding the rule of an empire to foreign lands and governing over them. Imperialism is also an extension of influence.

    2. A positive aspect of imperialism would be growth. The integration of countries would also mesh their cultures. Any party involved could find that the other has something to offer. Trade could begin and the societies would experience a time of prosperity.

A negative aspect of imperialism is the opposite. When the dominant countries decide to impose their beliefs on the recessive countries, it could start a war. As the recessive country likes to keep to their culture, they would decide to retaliate and "free themselves" from the oncoming threat.

    3. Orwell's story shows imperialism in that he had to keep up the reputation of Europe. "I often wondered whether any of the others grasped that I had done it solely to avoid looking a fool." (paragraph 14, sentence 7) Orwell was already despised by the Burmese. He was loyal to the Europeans and as the dominant empire, they had to keep control by constantly reminding the Indians of their power. When the Burmese wanted the elephant to be killed, they looked to Orwell as the one to do it because they were under a superior European mindset. When Orwell shoots the elephant it is to merely retain European image. It could also be said that it was to "save his own skin" from the crowd that would have looked down upon him with further scorn if he did not go through with it. For Orwell's own thoughts on imperialism, "For at that time I had already made up my mind that imperialism was an evil thing..." (paragraph 2, sentence 2). Orwell cannot stand the idea of imperialism. He has to be loyal to it as a European but he personally cannot agree with it.

As to a Siddhartha reference, the book goes over Siddhartha's life as he tries to find himself in his own world. Though it may not be by another country, Siddhartha's world does come under various religious influences. Siddhartha grows up as the son of a Brahmin priest. This was the usual tradition in India until the word of the Buddha and samanas came about. As both religions spread across India, Siddhartha found himself to be attracted to them and left the Brahmin lifestyle. He went into a state of religious imperialism as it were.

    1) Imperialism is a policy of extending your rule over foreign countries.

    2) A positive aspect of imperialism is one country might be offering another great opportunities or help socially or economically. I disagree with Michelle Wu says the countries who has more power can make the citizens work for them, I see that as a negative aspect. Its good for whoever has the good benefits of having more money and etc. but bad for who has to deal with losing great parts of the civilization.
A negative aspect of imperialism is what if a country does rule over another it can cause greed and start chaos. People become angry and that begins wars.

3)In the short story Shooting An Elephant, Imperialism is something bad in orwell's point of view. I have to Agree with Elizabeth Sabllos because that's exactly what I see through this story. She said. "The man who shot the elephant symbolized the British and the elephant symbolized the Indian town. The man felt guilty after shooting the elephant, which means he felt guilty working for the British who have treated the Indian town very badly." The bad thing is the man did what was expect of him even tho it was a harsh thing to do.

Imperialism is when someone with the power of dominance or a group or a country tries to enforce their own thoughts or policies and take advantage by power.

A potentionally positive effect imperialism can have is that it can boost the economy or educate other groups or nation.

Imperialism can have a negative effect on peoples cultures, beliefs, and there economy as well.
The role of imperialism in this short story is the British power of dominance it had over India.Orwell thinks imperialism is cruel and unfair. “– I had merely sent for the rifle to defend myself if necessary – and it is always unnerving to have a crowd following you.” The stress of invasion puts fear and stress under the weaker opponent so he doesn’t agree with the thought of imperialism.

1.Imperialism is when a country or group of people want to expand and become more dominant.
2.A potentially positive effect of Imperialism is that it can make a country or group of people extremely superior to other countries and governments. A potentially negative effect of Imperialism is that countries may feel the need to rebel against the country in power and start wars.
3.The role of Imperialism in "Shooting an Elephant" is that the British rule over Indians. Orwell's opinion of Imperialism in India is he feels that it is cruel, harsh and unfair. "For at that time I had made up my mind that imperialism was an evil thing and the sooner I chucked up my job and got out of it the better" (Page 1, Paragraph 2). I agree with Elizabeth Bonilla's definition of imperialism. In order for countries to expand they dominate other countries and groups of people.

1-Imperialism is the expanding of countries that allows them to also conquer other countries.

2-One positive effect of imperialism is when countries being expand are getting more and more people by their side. And a negative effect would be the people of the countries being conquered getting bad treatment in
order for other countries to take over.

3-In the short story "Shooting An Elephant" the role of imperialism is what's bad to Orwell. But he have no choice to do as hes said. "Afterwards, of course, there were endless discussions about the shooting of the elephant. The owner was furious, but he was only an Indian and could do nothing." (last paragraph) Orwell was told to kill the elephant although he didn't want to cause it would be too cruel to the owner yet he had to. After it was killed the owner was really upset but because of him being an Indian he could not do anything.

    1. Imperialism is when a country extends it's authority by expanding it's territory or by spreading itself economically with businesses on foreign land.

2.One positive effect from imperialism is gaining new territories which will then result in more power, wealth, resources and having less competing nations. One negative effect is that the smaller nations will have more competiton with the competition having larger armies(by comparison).

    3. The short story, "Shooting an Elephant", is about the British being imperialist and taking over a small Indian town. " No one had the guts to raise a riot, but if a European woman went through the bazaars alone somebody would probably spit betel juice over her dress. As a police officer I was an obvious target and was baited whenever it seemed safe to do so. When a nimble Burman tripped me up on the football field and the referee (another Burman) looked the other way, the crowd yelled with hideous laughter. This happened more than once. In the end the sneering yellow faces of young men that met me everywhere, the insults hooted after me when I was at a safe distance, got badly on my nerves. The young Buddhist priests were the worst of all. There were several thousands of them in the town and none of them seemed to have anything to do except stand on street corners and jeer at Europeans"(1st paragraph). Orwell's thought negatively about imperialism since the Indians had no more control over their town and were treated poorly as if they didn't have a reason to live.

    1) Imperialism is the act of spreading the word of the believer and extending its control and power over new people and/or new believers.
    2) Imperialism can be a positive act and a negative act depends on the situation. For example imperialism can be negative because it can cause being superior to others. And makes people think that their culture, ethnic group, and government works are the best. And might force people to join and follow these groups for the good or bad. In that case it will be a violation of human rights and freedom. In some cases imperialism can be good. Imperialism can perform diffusion spreading the word of the believers’ god for the good and showing new skills to the less fortunate. The correct imperialism can bring different cultures, people and military forces to do well.
    3) The role of imperialism in the story "Shooting an Elephant" seems to do the Indian people no good. The British are the "bad" people saying and jeering on about the Indians. Orwell doesn’t find that type of imperialism to do him or his people any good. "For at that time I had already made up my mind that imperialism was an evil thing and the sooner I chucked up my job and got out of it the better. Theoretically – and secretly, of course... All I knew was that I was stuck between my hatred of the empire I served and my rage against the evil-spirited little beasts who tried to make my job impossible." (Paragraph 2) He knew that he couldn’t rage with all his might because no good would come of it, and he sure didn’t want to be made fun of. And that’s why he killed his own friend, an Indian elephant, the elephant slowly died confused.
    Connection to Siddhartha
Siddhartha experienced the act of imperialism mentally. When he traveled the forest, rivers and towns, he came in peace, learned from his surroundings for the better. For example when he reached the child people according to Siddhartha he was disgusted by their acts and hated their way of life. But he took in the skills that he always had of fasting, waiting and learning. Soon he learned about making love, drinking, and gambling. At one moment he had all the skills together but his old skills fade away. But in the end he had it all. In the short story "Shooting an Elephant" Orwell was in the middle of bad imperialism because the hate was on him. He has a choice to please himself as an Indian or please the British. Orwell chose to please the British so he would not be made fun of for the rest of his life. Both Siddhartha and Orwell soon broke their old ways and developed bad habits just to please others.

    - I agree with Elizabeth Bonilla because in order to expand you must conquer for the better or good depending on the cause. But imperialism can be good or bad depending on the leader.
    - I agree with Cassidy, she used the quote "I often wondered whether any of the others grasped that I had done it solely to avoid looking a fool." (Paragraph 14, sentence 7). And that quote was perfect in showing the reader that Orwell didn’t go good to himself but to please the British.

  29. 1) Imperialism is extending your authority of an empire.

2)There are many positive effects of imperialism like how the larger nations gave to the smaller nations. The larger b=nations would teach and help get the smaller nation economized, built then stuff they coukdnt do on their own. One negetive effect was that the smaller countries would be treated differently, less important. They would have to do what the larger country told them to do.

3)The short story "Shooting an Elephant" is about the british taking over a small indian town. He thinks that imperialism is an evil thing. " For at that time I had already made up my mind that imperialism was an evil thing and the sooner I chucked up my job and got out of it the better." 1- Imperialism could be defined as possession of foreign territories or colonies for the benefit of the home country;it could also be defined as the policy of seeking to dominate economically, politically, or militarily weaker areas of the world.
2- Some positive effects of imperialism were that conquered natives were provided with security by their ruler and new technology was brought to them. Some negative effects of imperialism was that people would have experienced the loss of freedom, end up as being in slavery, the loss of their land and natural resources to the colonizer(s).
3-In this short story, Orwell used a metaphor to explain his opinion on imperialism in India. He compared the elephant to the weak territories that other nations try to take over and he played as the role of a country taking over. Orwell said a few of his ideas of imperialism with his metaphor. He had said, "I had no intention of shooting the elephant-I had merely sent for the rifle to defend myself...and obviously one ought not to do it if it can possibly be avoided." He was trying to say that many cases of imperialism might be done to help themselves but it might not necessarily mean that it is done on purpose, and he said that it is better to not start imperialism if it is possible. Another quote was, "When I pulled the trigger I did not hear the bang or feel the kick-one never does when a shot goes home...even for the bullet to get there, a mysterious, terrible change had come over the elephant." Orwell interpreted that imperialism brings about alot of great effect with it; rephrasing what I had said, Orwell believes that imperialism may be a major turning point but in a bad way. Imperialism seems to play as the topic that Orwell tries to discuss about with a time he shot an elephant.

~I would also agree with Michelle on her idea of a positive affect of imperialism. It may seem like a negative effect to the side of that is being taken over, but to the conquerors, being able to enslave the citizens of the foreign country for its own gain is a positive thing.

1.Imperialism is the policy of extending the rule or authority of an empire or nation over foreign countries.

2.A potentially positive effect of imperialism would be the unifying of lands and people together. The combined territory and knowledge gave advancement to technology and wealth.Due to imperialism new options and ways to live life was opened to people before being conquered.New cultures, easier farming technique, economic boost, and better system is possible. The United lands is always far more powerful than one itself.

3.A potentially negative effect of imperialism would be the conqueror would use the land for their own purposes without a single thought for the one they conquered. The land being conquered will have their resources taken and by all means make profit for the mother country. The people will be left with the land dead.Conqueror will use all means to satisfied their purposes. At the end the land with be destroyed.

3.Orwell opinion on imperialism is it's a stupid, ill nature thing to do.Orwell himself played the part as imperialism in the story."I often wondered whether any of the others grasped that I had done it solely to avoid looking a fool."(final paragraph)Orwell first thought of the elephant was to watch it and spare it.But then a crowd of thousands of people was with him watching him shoot the elephant. To make himself not to look a fool he was pressured to shoot the elephant by the peoples.Exactly the same with imperialism with it's overpowering sensation forcing their way in.Orwell was forced to kill the elephant just like imperialism with it's dominating power taking the lands. The people have no choice but to give in.Orwell with the same situation gave in to the pressure and shot the elephant.Imperialism is basically a powerful force where people have to surrender to such a force.Orwell was overpowered and he gave in to the townsmen. He hates the idea to be forced unwillingly to the things. It's like he had to shoot the elephant.Imperialism in the story is a powerful took with total control over it's subjects.

Imperialism is the extending of power through conquering other nations, foreign countries, etc. A positive effect of imperialism is the ones trying to conquer other places will gain more power, land, and wealth. A negative effect of imperialism is that it can create war between two nations/countries fighting over the land. When the land is conquered, the people on the land can be forced to change their beliefs. In the short story “Shooting an Elephant”, the role of imperialism is that the British ruled over the Indians. “For at that time I had already made up my mind that imperialism was an evil thing... ” (paragraph 2). Orwell’s opinion of imperialism is that it’s a bad thing. Just like how he thought shooting the elephant was a harsh thing to do. Orwell didn’t want to shoot the elephant but from looking like a fool in front of a large crowd, he had to shoot the elephant. “The people expected it of me and I had got to do it;” (paragraph 7).

I agree with Michelle Wu on her positive and negative effects of imperialism. Once a land is conquered, everything would change and it affects the people who were conquered.

  38. 1) Imperialism is the policy of extending the rule or authority of an empire or nation over foreign countries. the act of showing that you are more superior than others. Having more control over nations.
    2) One potentially effect of imperialism is that you have more land and power to improve your technology with the ideas of the people you have conquered. One negative effect is that the people you have conquered may feel the right to attack you and start wars showing that they are not as weak as they seem.
    3) Orwell's opinion on imperialism is that it leads to nothing but problems. It is evil and wrong. Evidence is found in paragraph#2,"For at that time I had already made up my mind that imperialism was an evil thing and the sooner I chucked up my job and got out of it the better." He compares the elephant to the territories that get conquered. The elephant symbolizes the weakness the territories feel when being conquered and taken over.

  40. Imperialism is the process of ruthlessly taking over other nations, often purely for the sake of expansion.

A positive aspect of imperialism is that it can help a nation to become more known, and helps thier ideas spread so that the entire world can grow as one. However, at the same time, imperialism restricts the ideas and policies of other potentially great nations, preventing the spread of what could be a life changing idea.

Orwell feels that imperialism, although meant to give one more authority, merely makes turns that man into a subordinate of his subjects. You can see this when Orwell states "but in reality I was only an absurd puppet pushed to and fro by the will of the yellow faces behind." When an imperialist takes over a nation, he mus do what the natives would feel to be right, or face negative publicity or even an uprising.

I agree with what Iqra said about the elephant being a metaphor for the nations conquered by imperialism. They suffer and ache, but are never quite killed, and this infinite torture is precisely why imperialism is evil.
I also think Liang Zhang gives a good backup for my argument on how imperialism makes a man lose his free will. Despite the fact that Orwell actually had authority over the natives, he still gave in to THIER orders merely because he didn't want to look bad.

    1. Imperialism is policy to expand empires by ruling other civilizations.

    2. One positive effect of imperialism is that imperialism helps with cultural diffusion. After a country is taken over they might have to take part in the religion the ruling empire believes in. One negative effect of imperialism is that many empires think that they should be the only empire that can expand and this causes wars all over the world.

    3. Orwell is trying to tell us that imperialism has a huge influence on people. "In Moulmein, in lower Burma, I was hated by large numbers of people – the only time in my life that I have been important enough for this to happen to me. I was sub-divisional police officer of the town, and in an aimless, petty kind of way anti-European feeling was very bitter."(paragraph 1).

Imperialism occurs when a strong nation takes over a weaker nation or region and dominates its economic, political, or cultural life. One positive impact includes trading globally which will lead to new inventions and discovery of new materials. One negative impact is that cultures in a particular country can be forgotten, lost, and then not known. The background behind “Shooting an Elephant” is that Britain conquered Burma over a period of sixty-two years. The narrator is a police officer in Burma, and his role makes him a symbol of the oppressive imperial power. And he is subjected to constant hating by the local people. After receiving a call regarding a normally tame elephant's rampage, he brings his elephant rifle and, followed by a group of roughly a few thousand people, heads toward the where the elephant has rested. Even though he does not want to shoot the elephant, he feels surrendered to all these natives around him. Not willing to look like a fool, he does what he thinks the people want and kills the elephant. This essay by George Orwell is about his opinion on imperialism. “…I had already made up my mind that imperialism was an evil thing…” He wants to end imperialism, and "Shooting an Elephant", ironically, appeals to the British to stop colonialism. By describing the dead coolie which the elephant has killed, the pressure from the Burmese to shoot the elephant, and the tragically slow death of the elephant, Orwell shows how absurd imperialism is.

I agree with Anthony Grullon because a positive impact of imperialism is making a country powerful and larger.
I agree with Justin Beskin because Orwell did not approve of imperialism.

  52. Imperialism is when a nation takes over another territory, and has power, influence, and authority over them.

A potentially positive effect of imperialism is that if a nation is in trouble and their goverment is not doing what is right for the people, another nation can take over that territory and hopefully make things right and help the people. A negative effect is if a nation takes over a territory just to make themselves more powerful, and they terrorize the people and make them slaves, or pay ridiculous taxes, or force their religion on to them, etc.

The role of imperialism in "Shooting An Elephant" was for the British to negatively take control over Indian civilizations. In the last paragraph it says,"The owner was furious, but he was only an Indian and could do nothing." This shows that the British had a complete and negative control over the Indians because what the Indians had to say didn't matter. Orwell said, "...All these oppressed me with an intolerable sense of guilt." He didn't like imperialism because he saw up close the evilness of the British Empire. He saw how the Indians were treated, and felt bad for how harshly the prisoners were treated.

  53. I disagree with Justin Beskin's definition of imperialism. "When a place takes over other places to expand." Nations don't always conquer other places so they can expand. They can sometimes do it to help the other nation if they need help like what what we tried to do to Iraq. The U.S. didnt do it to help us expand our nation.

I disagree with Kevin Sanchez when he said, "One positive effect of imperialism is that a lot of places would be united because they would be under the same ruler." Just because everyone is under the same ruler foesn't mean everything is great. The ruler can be a cruel ruler. If everyone is under the same ruler that could just mean everyone will be upset, poorly treated, and miserable together.

  59. Imperialism is when a country wants to expand and takes control of another country.

A positive effect of imperialism that a country would gain more resources, land, and power. The land that a country gains from imperialism have the resource that the country needs. Also, the land can make profits and the country's economy can rise. The more land one country conquers the more power the country gets. A negative effect of imperialism can be religion and slavery. The country that conquered the weaker country can force the people in the conquered country to change their religion. Imperialism can lead to slavery since the powerful country needs people to work but, for free. So the solution to the problem is slavery.

The role of imperialism in the short story "Shooting an Elephant" is that it is a bad thing and can pressure people to do things. "A white man mustn't be frightened in front of "natives"; and so, in general, he isn't frightened."(paragraph 9) In "Shooting an Elephant" the man didn't want to shoot the elephant but, there was a crowd of "natives" waiting for his pistol to go off. He didn't want to look like a fool or look weak in front of the "natives." This is because his country conquered the "natives'" country . He had to be strong because he was from the stronger country. He thought that his race must never be frighten of anyone or anything. Which pressured him to shoot the elephant. Due to this the elephant died a slow and painful death.

    1. Imperialism signifies when an empire is dominated over another country, so most people are affected and treated with despicable manner. Additionally, many people are prejudice and have a plethora of opinions that the imperialists’ opinions are superior.

    2. There are both positive and negative and effects of imperialism. The positive effect of imperialism is that it can bring many desires and have people feel more involved in the world. For example, the police officer wanted to shoot the savage elephant, and many of the population followed him to see what they all admired, so there isn't any horror in their society anymore. In addition, imperialism can bring that glow in a country. It evolves the inner country and develops into something creative, because so many ideas are spread that art, creativity, intelligent acts are fulfilled throughout the country. Secondly, one potentially negative effect of imperialism is that it can bring the nation at its downfall, and it shows its wicked core, which many individuals can be frightened to express. Most people are cautious about the rules, but when someone is in need of nourishment they just observe and look away. For instance, in Moulmein, their was a sub-divisional police officer who was bullied and many people distrusted him because the superior individuals’ opinions affect their own, so they decide to spit upon the people who care for their country. Overall, imperialism brings the content yet conflicts in society.

    3. The role of imperialism in the short story was very condescending and Orwell's opinion on imperialism was highly disgusted. For example, in the short story "Shooting an Elephant" by Orwell was very head throbbing by the role of imperialism because imperialism struck most people and many people despised each other. Imperialism was very superior in the "Shooting an Elephant" short story because most individuals such as Buddhist and the priest would stand at the street corners and scorn the Europeans. If it was that harsh for them to even stand at street corners, then most people were getting physically judged by what happened, and it was causing a national catastrophe. In addition, imperialism in India was also based on shooting the elephant, because nobody brought any attention to the police officer, but when he had the rifle to shoot the elephant everyone was content and joyful to see its death. Additionally, Orwell was highly disgusted because he glanced at the whole society, and most people defied others. They didn't enjoy that many people are very opinionated, this creates differences. As for Orwell's opinion, he notified that he was going to slay the elephant so the crowd followed his heels, because throughout those differences there are many similarities. He wanted to kill the elephant to "...avoid looking a fool" and the crowd wanted the death to abrupt for the best. Overall, Orwell's opinion defined the inquiry of imperialism based on the important events that were sequenced.

    2) There are many positive effects due to imperialism and one of them is cultural diffusion. When the British came to America and ruled over the American Indians, they had introduced new weapons to them. At the same time, the Indians had showed British their religion and tobacco.

    3) In the other hand, there are many problems that were caused by imperialism and it is deaths. As we all had learn, most of the Indians were killed and some of them were force to work as slaves. The tragic that happened should have been preventable.

    4) In the short story, “Shooting an Elephant”, imperialism was the main idea. The British took over an Indian town. They were too powerful and advance that the Indians cannot fight back. The soldiers became haughty and mistreated the Indians. That gave the glories to the soldiers, but not Orwell. He disagrees with imperialism, “seemingly the leading actor of the piece; but in reality I was only an absurd puppet pushed to and fro by the will of those yellow faces behind.” He views himself as a puppet and is making every action against his will.

I agree with Ruben, his idea about imperialism is very similar to mine. According to the book, Siddhartha, desire is endless and so is imperialism.

    1) Imperialism is when a country, nation, empire, etc. extends their rule over other countries that they have not already taken captive of.
    2) One potentially positive effect of imperialism would be that, it would help to expand the amount of territory they would have. This will show to the other countries, nations, or empires on how powerful they are to obtain so much territory. It would be useful if a war or a battle was to break out and they were involved. A negative outcome would be that, some of the people who are involved would be miserable. Since it is not a question of whether or not they can live by the rules that this event has put on them. They have to live their life the way others want it to be or deal with the consequences that come with it if they don’t do as they are told.
    3) In the short story “Shooting an Elephant”, the British are ruling over an Indian town, Moulmein, and they are very anti-European. “For at that time I had already made up my mind that imperialism was an evil thing…” (Paragraph two). This was Orwell’s opinion on imperialism in India, which was that he thought it was really cruel and evil. Many Europeans like himself were being hurt without a good reason and laughed at.

    2) One potentially positive effect of imperialism is the growth within a nation. Imperialism brings two different civilizations and turns them into one in which can create cultural diffusion. The effects of cultural diffusion can be extremely beneficial to a nation which leads me to believe that these are the positive effects of imperialism.

    2) A potentially negative effect that can be caused by imperialism is war and strife. Imperialism evolves forcefully taking control of another civilization. It is highly likely that the country being invaded would retaliate and there would most likely be war. in addition to there would never be complete trust from invaded countries and there may very well be conflict inside the nation as a whole.

    1. Imperialism is when a country or nations extends it's borders by engaging in war with others.

    2. A positive affect of imperialism would be that the country is able to expand and gain more followers/ Gaining more land and people would make that country more powerful and less easily destroyed. One negative effect of imperialism is that if a country has too much land, other countries will be threatened and more of the countries will want more. The country dealing with the wars will have to make sure the land is thoroughly protected.

    3. George Orwell strongly disagrees with the idea if imperialism because many people were treated unfairly.

  82. I agree with Chaplin that too much control can lead to higher demands. One ruler can't have that much time on their hands to be able to reach every corner of their territory to check what's going on and the needs of others.

I also agree with Logan's perspective on imperialism about conflict within the country. Most countries forced into the submission will not fully trust the ones that have conquered them and they may not want to contribute or help the country.

    1. What is imperialism?

Imperialism is when one nation takes over another nation and dominates certain parts of it's day to day life.

    2. Describe one potentially positive effect of imperialism and one potentially negative effect of imperialism.

One potentially positive effect of imperialism is that one nation can build a large empire to create alliances, but one potentially negative effect of this is that the other nation can have their rights and liberties restricted because of the ruling nation's ways.

    3. Explain the role of imperialism in the short story "Shooting an Elephant" and evaluate Orwell's opinion on imperialism in India. Make sure to include specific evidence from the short story to support your argument.

Imperialism plays a large role in the short story "Shooting an Elephant" . Orwell had to make the decision to shoot the elephant in order to keep himself from looking foolish as well as to keep order in the community. He states "Besides, legally I had done the right thing, for a mad elephant has to be killed, like a mad dog, if its owner fails to control it" which shows that the elephant's wild rampage had brought it to it's death. Because Orwell is an officer in British-controlled India, he has to keep the empire strong by having the Burmese people have faith in the British to protect them while they create their empire. Orwell does not believe that imperialism is a good idea.

I agree with Kayla William's definition of imperialism and I would like to add that extending rule over foreign countries may not always be a positive thing.

Elizabeth Saballos' simile of how the British ruling over India is similar to the elephant ruling over the village when he rampages showed me another way that Orwell did not think highly of imperialism.

  84. 1. Imperialism is the idea of one society taking over another society in order to rule more land. Conflicts can occur during this process and it is usually a negative note to the society being taken over.

    2. One positive effect of imperialism is that the two societies can work something out and both result in cultural diffusion. Where one society learns from the other and vice versa. One negative effect of imperialism is war. This may happen when one society rebels against the other conquering them. Wars can result in huge losses.

    3. In the short story, Orwell is a British police in India. This is showing imperialism because Europe is taking over India and holding it under their control. Orwell is faced with a decision to either shoot a rampaging elephant or not. "The sole thought in my mind was that if anything went wrong those two thousand Burmans would see me pursued, caught, trampled on and reduced to a grinning corpse like that Indian up the hill. And if that happened it was quite probable that some of them would laugh. That would never do". Orwell was afraid the Burmans would laugh at him if he failed. As a result of peer pressure, Orwell takes the shot and kills the elephant. He feels horrible but the Burmans cheered for him. He believes imperialism is corrupt and wrong.

    ~~~I disagree with Tony, it doesn't have to be a stronger nation taking over the weaker one. It can be the complete opposite. It's only a matter of if they are successful at it.
    ~~~I agree with Zhe Kwok Weng the more population you have, the stronger your empire/nation/society will be.

*Sorry Ms. Shalev. I just found out my post didn't go through.*

1)Imperialism is when an authority is expanded over other countries or villages whether they want it or not. Essentially it is taking over another country.

    2) A potential positive effect of imperialism can be development of a society. If the leader that takes over was powerful and resourceful; he improve the societies that he conquers. A potential negative effect of imperialism can be war or chaos. If a society has no interest in being ruled they can choose to revolt. That can be dangerous to everyone and cause many deaths.

3)The role of imperialism wasn't very big in it of itself, but it's effect rung loud and clear throughout the story. The narrator has a job in India as England and India are fighting over power (imperialism). The people in India hate the narrator and they ridicule him. When he had to make an important decision, he let his pride get in that way of doing what was right. He shot the elephant so that he didn't risk being laughed at. Although, he clearly knew the elephant probably posed no threat. Based on the content of the story I would say that Orwell believes that imperialism changes people no matter what side you are on. It makes them bitter and ignorant.

    Response's to Peers:
1)I agree with Elizabeth Bonilla's view on a potential negative affect. I also think that a country can become bitter about being conquered and they could strive to gain their own power and conquer others. I think that would result in a very dangerous world.

2)I really liked how Elizabeth Saballos' positive effect included working together and sharing ideas. I think this world would be a better place if countries actually did that.

    1) Imperialism is when an empire takes control over other empire's to expand.
    2) A positive effect imperialism might have is that it can allow the ruler's to have more power and the resources that the land might have can bring wealth. A negative effect imperialism might have is that with a lot of land the empire might be hard to control, which will make the empire easy to conquer.
    3) The role of imperialism in the short story "Shooting an Elephant" is that the English are in control of the Indian town. Orwell's opinion of imperialism is that it isn't positive at all. "All I knew was that I was stuck between my hatred of the empire I served and my rage against the evil-spirited little beasts who tried to make my job impossible."

1)I agree with Blanca Melendez about how imperialism could be positive if the empire had a great leader. If they did have a great leader not only will he improve the society, but strengthen it as well.
    2) I agree with Iqra about how Orwell uses the elephant as a metaphor to symbolize the territories that were taken over.

  88. 1. Imperialism is when one country rules over another.

    2. A positive impact of imperialism is having more rights then others if you are from the country ruling (even though it is not fair). A negative impact of imperialism if your from the country that was taken over is being mistreated and having no say in many things.

    3. In "shooting an elephant" imperialism effects the Orwell because all of the "yellow faced people" mistreat him because he was a european. "When a nimble Burman tripped me up on the football field and the referee (another Burman) looked the other way, the crowd yelled with hideous laughter." Because of how mistreated Orwell was, he had a negative opinion on imperialism.

  89. I agree with Jason that a negative impact of imperialism is how it can sometimes have the efect of war because when power comes into question each country is always going to want more then the other.

I also agree with stephanie because imperialism connects two countries together expanding and making themselves much stronger.
